Northern and northeastern Thailand are advised to prepare for isolated heavy rain showers this weekend (September 7-8) as Tropical Storm Yagi strengthens into a typhoon.
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the storm, currently over the upper South China Sea, is expected to strengthen as it moves toward Hainan, China. The storm is expected to make landfall in Vietnam on Friday or Saturday, where it will weaken but still bring heavy rain to parts of Thailand.
The storm's influence coincides with the presence of a moderate monsoon trough and a strong southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. From 4 to 6 September, these weather systems are expected to bring heavy rains to the lower north, central and northeastern parts of the country. There is even a chance of very heavy rains along the east and west coasts.
Residents in the affected areas, especially those near mountain slopes, rivers and low-lying areas, are warned to be alert for possible flooding and rising river levels as a result of the heavy rains. Authorities advise taking necessary precautions as the storm approaches.
Maritime conditions will also be hazardous. In the Andaman Sea and the northern Gulf of Thailand, waves of up to three meters high are expected during thunderstorms, with the possibility of even higher waves. All vessels are advised to proceed with extreme caution, and smaller boats should remain on land until the weather improves.
