Tham Luang Cave opens doors: Historical rescue revives for visitors
The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) will offer guided tours of Room 3 of Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai province. This part of the cave was the focal point for the sensational rescue of the “Wild Boars” football team five years ago.
DNP Director General Athapol Charoenchansa reported that these tours, which begin on December 15, will lead groups of 10-12 visitors to rooms 2 and 3. Visitors get a direct impression of the challenges encountered during the rescue operation.
In 2018, Tham Luang Cave came into the global spotlight when 12 young footballers and their coach were trapped by floods for 18 days. The department aims to offer adventure treks through these tours, which illustrate the complex nature of the rescue operation, including the installation and transport logistics involved.
Previously, Chamber 3, about two kilometers from the cave opening, was only accessible to researchers and specialists. Officials hope the upcoming tours will showcase a vital part of Thai history to the public, while allowing visitors to recognize the complexity and extensive efforts of the important rescue mission.
