During the New Year period in Thailand, also known as the “seven dangerous days”, a significant increase in road accidents has been observed. Within just four days, the number of deaths reached 190. On the first day of the new year, 62 deaths were reported. A total of 419 accidents occurred that day, in which 422 people were injured.

The main cause of these accidents was driving too fast, accounting for 39,4% of the cases. Drunk driving was the second leading cause at 30,55%. The vast majority of these accidents, namely 86,51%, involved motorcycles. These mainly took place on highways and local roads. Young people in the age category of 20 to 29 years were most often involved in these accidents, with 17,36% of the victims.

The provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan and Songkhla recorded the most accidents, while Bangkok had the highest number of fatalities. During the long holiday weekend, 1.570 accidents occurred, in which 1.574 people were injured. Kanchanaburi took the cake with the highest number of accidents and injuries.

As the holiday season ends, officials expressed concerns about increased traffic and the increased risk of more accidents. The Ministry of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation advises drivers to drive carefully, especially when tired. They also emphasize the importance of checking the condition of the vehicle before traveling.

It would help if the 'Traffic Police' would take their job seriously, instead of sitting in tents along the road, eating and drinking, playing with the telephone - which is always announced here by the government as 'intensified control' ……. I have seen many examples of this in recent days.

Indeed, 4 traffic deaths in 190 days. That is a lot, but it is not too bad compared to the average number of road deaths per day over an entire year. . Last year there were 22.000 road deaths, an average of 60 per day
