The MRT Pink Line service in Bangkok has been temporarily suspended following the order of Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit. This suspension, effective Sunday, December 24, followed an incident in which a rail became loose and fell near Samakkhi station early in the morning.
The decision to temporarily suspend services was made in collaboration with relevant agencies such as the Department of Rail Transport (DRT), the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and the Northern Bangkok Monorail Company Limited. The main reason for this decision was the safety of passengers, as the fallen railway line hit power lines at a market near the Royal Irrigation Department, causing damage.
Services at 23 stations of the Pink Line, from Chaeng Wattana to Minburi, are expected to resume on December 25. However, seven stations from the Nonthaburi Civic Center to the Pak Kret Bypass will remain closed for a week to allow the DRT to conduct thorough inspections.
Minister Suriya has indicated that future incidents will be fined in accordance with the contractual conditions for train traffic. A preliminary investigation indicates that soil particles on an inspection vehicle may have contributed to the loosening of the rail.
