Aid is slow to arrive, hospitals overloaded

The official death toll from the massive earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 1.002. According to the country's military leadership, 2.376 people have also been injured. Dozens of people are still missing.

Most of the casualties were in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city and close to the quake's epicenter. Nearly all buildings there were damaged. Hospitals are overloaded and are short of staff and medical supplies.

A state of emergency has been declared in six regions. Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless and are forced to sleep in temporary shelters or on the streets.

International aid is slowly coming. South Korea, among others, has pledged almost 2 million euros. China, India, Russia, Singapore and the United States have also sent rescue teams and emergency aid. The United Nations has made 5 million dollars available for direct humanitarian aid.

UNICEF speaks of a disaster of "enormous proportions", especially for children and vulnerable families in the affected area. The organization is concerned about the water supply, sanitation conditions and access to health care.

The 7,7 magnitude quake struck central Myanmar on Friday and was also felt in neighbouring countries including Thailand, Vietnam and China.
