The earlier message, that Thailandblog.nl and other social media, that the traditional Remembrance Day on the grounds of the Dutch embassy in Bangkok would not take place this year, went down the wrong way with many Dutch people in Thailand.

The “news” even made it to the Dutch press, where De Telegraaf paid attention to this affair: “Remembrance Day is simply very important, you should continue to do that,” says Martien Vlemmix. The chairman of the Dutch SME in Thailand always laid a wreath himself and did not understand the cancellation.

Polder solution

After all the commotion, Ambassador Rade – with or without the consent of “The Hague” – has decided to allow Remembrance Day to take place this year, albeit a day earlier. De Telegraaf called it a typical polder solution. Anyway, the embassy has posted the following invitation on its Facebook page

Invitation Remembrance Day embassy Friday 3 May

Due to the great interest shown in a commemoration ceremony, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangkok will organize a meeting on Friday 3 May 2019 on the grounds of the embassy. This alternative date has been chosen in connection with the coronation ceremonies from 4 to 6 May.

At 16.30 pm will be collected at the residence. The ceremony itself starts at 17.00 p.m.

If you wish to attend the commemoration, you can register until Thursday 2 May via [email protected] (Please mention 'Remembrance Day' in the subject). For the commemoration, the entrance at Wireless Road, no. 106 opposite All Seasons Place, will be used (NB there is no parking available on the embassy grounds).

  1. chris says up

If everyone who has made such a point of the cancellation of the commemoration of death at the embassy in Bangkok on 4 May 2019 now really comes up with this 'polder solution', it must become 4 to 5 as busy as the commemoration has been in recent years. So extra coffee and cake.
