New Belgian passport wins “Best New Passport 2022” award
It may also be good news. “The new Belgian passport has won the “Best New Passport 2022” award.
Described as a "bold design of a highly secured document", the Belgian passport, with its very Belgian illustrations, which pay homage to our cartoon characters, but above all its many security techniques, did not go unnoticed by the international audience of professionals in the sector during the High Security Printing-EMEA conference in Tallinn.
In January 2022, the FPS Foreign Affairs presented the new Belgian passport. Since February 2022, it can be applied for at your municipality in Belgium or, at the consular post competent for your permanent residence abroad, if you live abroad and are registered with the Belgian consular post.'”

I just took the trouble to look at the inside via the vrt.be link in the article. It can also be found via Google.
The inside of the passport contains drawings of Suske & Wiske, Lucky Luke and The Smurfs, among others.
I, 46 years old, must be old-fashioned, but to decorate the most important official document that a person can possess with comic strip figures is bizarre to me. The Belgian people should at least have been given a choice: an official-looking document or an official document with images of the Smurfs in it.
People with no gender in a passport, men who become pregnant and Lucky Luke in a passport. Welcome to 2022, humanity is moving forward in leaps and bounds.
The fact that the passport apparently has super security is irrelevant to me. This could have been a normal looking passport too.
You can just like it instead of the buildings that are in it now, or take the opportunity to complain about something….
And let's not forget that many of those cartoon characters are better known in the world than the buildings that are in them now.
Otherwise, it's kind of funny what you write. “The Belgian people should at least have been given a choice: an official-looking document or an official document with images of the Smurfs in it.”
I would go for the cartoon characters anyway, because that is the official document. Without it, it would just be an official-looking document.
Besides, “the most important official document a person can possess” is not the passport. You can do without.
The birth certificate, on the other hand, is a lot more important, because I don't think you can get much without it. No passport either.
10 years validity like most countries (including the Netherlands) was apparently not necessary….
But yes….what to expect from “Vivaldi”
well , I think it is fantastic . Bet there will be imitation ?
Me, too. There is already so much misery and seriousness in life that any form of relief is more than welcome.
Isn't humor THE solution to put everything into perspective? Anything that can make man smile should be grasped with both hands.
Seems cool to me a Dutch passport with Fokke & Sukke, Franka (my fave), Ollie B. Bommel, Jan, Jans and the Children, and the Doorzon Family. But well… that's un-Dutch. We prefer to show off Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Jan Steen, etc
But for practical reasons Fokke & Sukke don't like it in the front: then you will never get a stamp from that customs officer who always seems humorless, ha, ha!
