Thailand ranks second after Singapore among countries in Southeast Asia with the highest number of elderly people. Society will age even more in the next seven years, according to the Thai Ministry of Health.
Jedsada Chockdamrongsuk, director general of the Mental Health Department, further notes that at the last count on December 31, 2013, nearly 9 million people over the age of 60 have been registered. That amounts to 14 percent of the Thai population. This 14 percent of older people consists mainly of women.
In the coming years, the number of elderly people will rise to 13 million, or one fifth of the total population. In 2031, the Thai population will be completely aged.
As of 2018, there are more people over 60 than children in Thailand. April 13, the first day of Songkran, is Thailand's National Day of the Elderly.

Although Thailand is aging , I have a lot of respect for the Thai old people .
Many are still working and still not afraid of the sun and of waving their hands.
Unfortunately , you can not say that about the Thai mobile phones and new moped riding youth here .
It is not for nothing that the Burmese do all the heavy lifting here.
Last months I had a construction team at work laying the walls of our new home.
Five construction workers already of age , and believe it or not .
Two Thai ladies over 62 years old, I repeat 62 years old, who made the cement mix and dragged stones. When I asked the foreman of the team through my husband why there were no young people to do this already difficult work, especially in this recent heat.
He replied , young Thai construction workers are hard to come by .
I see them with the current Thai youth almost every day , where the work is not heavy and there is air conditioning .
