Thailand is the sixth best country in the world for expats to work and live in, according to a recent survey, reflecting the confidence foreigners have in the country's potential.

InterNations, an international website for people living and working abroad, has shared the results of its 2023 Expat Insider survey. This survey shows that Thailand ranks sixth out of 53 countries worldwide that are ranked as attractive and suitable destinations for expats.

The report is based on the experiences of more than 12.000 expats from 171 countries and regions. This position is an improvement from Thailand's eighth place in 2022 and twelfth place in 2021. The top three countries in the 2023 ranking are Mexico, Spain and Panama.

The 2023 Expat Insider Report evaluated five key areas: quality of life, ease of establishment, general work environment, cost of living and availability of infrastructure including international schools, quality of healthcare and digital infrastructure.

Today we are inundated with the results of (often) meaningless statistical studies, which without exception aim to influence our thinking or outlook.

Yes yes, the digital infrastructure. Great in Thailand! People have certainly only looked in the largest cities where there is fiber optic and fast internet. Where our house is, in Baan Achtergat, power and internet go out with every thunderstorm and heavy storm and then it remains to be seen how quickly people can recover. Anything from 5 seconds to 24 hours is possible.

It will be quite true in the big cities but test very well before renting anywhere.

This study is about “working and living for expats”.

Expats live and work in large, modern cities. In Baan Achtergat they only pay a visit.

A very important item is the social services and they are not even included. If you take that into account, I'm afraid that the order of this ranking is no longer correct.
