What is Pattaya Darkside?

I sometimes hear and read something about Pattaya Darkside. I think an area a little further from the center. But what exactly is that and why is it called that? How do you get there? And what is there to experience? Are there also pubs?

People call it the Dark side, I think, simply because there is less light (advertising) and it is less touristy, see less busy (although)
It is gradually becoming the place par excellence for long-stayers. The retirees who have grown tired of the hustle and bustle of the traditional tourist and prefer to hang out with people who live permanently in Thailand.
There is more than enough entertainment bars restaurants and sports clubs. Also shops and businesses galore.
The only disadvantage is that everything is a bit further apart and you can't do without your own transport. A scooter is pretty much a must.
Another disadvantage could be that you are much further from the beach to see the sea and the dike if that is one of your priorities.
The "dark side" is on the other side of Sukumvit Road. It got that name when there were no street lights yet. Furthermore, Fred has already told the most important thing above.
As far as I know it has to do with the fact that that side of the Sukhumvitroad was the last to be supplied with electricity, hence the name darkside.
That is the explanation that also seems most likely.
Area Beach and second road were fully lit mainly with advertising. A large ball of light.
Essentially you went from light to dark when you went to the Darkside and the name stuck.
In the early 90s I used to come there more often because a girlfriend at the time had a room there. But there was really nothing to do I remember except for some bars where mainly Thai people came.
I don't know how it is today. I think it's been about 7-8 years since I've been to Pattaya.
It is no longer comparable to 10 years ago. A lot has been added. Perfectly livable now. Also plenty of Western restaurants. During the corona period it was even a lot livelier than in the more famous part of Pattaya.
Pattaya Darkside is the other side of the Sukhumvit road (the highway no. 3 that runs straight through Pattaya. The east side, therefore, towards the hills. The Thais mainly live there. A busy affair. More and more farang and their business settle there because it is life is much cheaper.The (future fast) train also finds its way to Sattahip 1x per day.
