Dear readers,

We are looking for tickets for our (family) trip to Thailand. Your blog states that research shows that the best period to book is 108 or 54 days in advance. But we heard from others about 9 months in advance (= now).

We find it quite exciting to wait until about May next year or even later to book. It's still 5 tickets. Do you have any experiences with offers in May for the July period?

Flight tickets are now around 660 euros via Dusseldorf. We just don't really know what a good price is for a ticket in the period mid-July (departure to Thailand).

We are looking forward to your response, thank you!!

Sincerely,

Erlin

Looking at the ticket prices almost every day, I booked for less than 500 euros 4 months ago. Between 500 and 600 is cheap, if you see this book immediately, make sure you have a good cancellation insurance, for example a continuous one.

Today again a message from Ticket spy. Transfer with KLM to Moscow with …….
Register with Ticket Spy and you will receive offers every time.

I agree with what foodlover says above. I do want to add that it can make a difference whether you take a direct flight or with stopover(s). You have to be careful with stops, because a lot can happen travel time varies from 15 hours to 30 hours, a direct flight is normally around 11 hours. Direct flights should normally be found between 500 and 600 euros.

My experience is that there is really no level to be measured. And the airlines want it that way too. I used to usually book a few months in advance. Nowadays usually a few days. But one ticket is enough for me and I am flexible in my dates.
The prices depend more on the period in which you fly than the period in which you book. Highest prices in the peak season, mid-December to mid-January, high in the (Thai) high season, November to March, and unfortunately for you also increased during the European high season.
You can, of course, wait to see if someone will take action, and that will certainly be the case, but whether data will be available that suits you is always very much the question.
In any case, € 660.- in July is a good price, especially if it is a direct flight, but that is not apparent from the question.
Instead of roaming the ticket sites more or less daily, if you book early, you can better read up on the things you want to do in Thailand, and how it all works here.
That can ultimately save you a lot of money – and annoyance – and it gives you more anticipation.

  4. francamsterdam says up

From Frankfurt you can fly directly with Thai Airways.
For example, currently there on 17/07 and back on 07/08 for € 721.-
If that € 660 does not concern a direct flight, that is also worth considering.
With a stopover, it is always a choice between two evils:
A short stop, then you're just stressing because you can't afford a delay, and if you don't make your transfer it will be a drama.
A long stop, then you just hang out at that airport (not without costs), you arrive broken, it takes a lot of time and you dread the return flight three weeks in advance.
With the five of us (three children) that doesn't seem like fun at all.

And Manni, a direct flight in July normally costs between €500 and €600?
    Where?
    Then I buy 100.

  5. francamsterdam says up

@Manni: I'll donate €25 to the Charity Fund if you find a direct flight today, there on 17/07 and back on 07/08, for less than €600
(Not from Kuala Lumpur of course 🙂

Some reactions are much too overconfident and based on nothing that one can always fly so cheaply. Got lucky once Munchen-Bangkok for 580 Euro! That was a real bargain.

@ Frans, for a good cause I just turned the search engines upside down. Your data from Frankfurt for 706 Euro with Thai Airways, direct flight! I would say in that period, top price with this company!!!

Have looked at departures from Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Brussels and Frankfurt.

from Paris with Turkish Airlines for 500 euros, mid-January for 3 months.

I am also amazed at all those cheap flights. prices between euro 500. and 600. possible with a stopover? and in 2014.
i bought a flight direct with china airlines at the end of january and back mid april for euro 616. possibly this price level is 2015.
I would advise you to look at skyscanner.com and use that overview to choose how much time you want to spend on the flight and consequently on the price.
frans a. has good advice. have fun!

one piece of advice just book early . it has often happened to me that tickets have become twice as expensive . best is if you go in July, just book in 2014. other tip book on a weekday often saves money. another tip fly on tuesday or thursday from dusseldorf . hope this is of some use to you.

  8. henk j says up

You can't gauge the prices of airline tickets.
I regularly check with Skyscanner and then indicate on a number of random dates that they send an alert.
Average price is usually 600 to 630 exceptions down and up.
There is a lot of stunting with Norwegian airline, but the catch is that luggage and food still have to be paid.
Flying from Dusseldorf and Frankfurt can be very attractive.
But Brussels occasionally also has cheap tickets.
Flying directly or with an intermediate flight is very personal.
I now have a ticket Bangkok-Amsterdam vv for 630 euros with China Southern Airlines with a stopover of about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Conversely, these types of tickets are also available.
Also flew with Emirates via Dubai and there the waiting time is about 2 hours. Now I don't mind waiting and looking around at an airport and I'm not so much tied to dates and time.
If you find a ticket with a favorable price, just book it. Then don't look to see if you might be 10 euros cheaper at a later date.
You will always find a price difference in your favor, but that risk is high.
the same applies of course to the prices on the market .. If you buy something you have the feeling that you have made a good deal, if you then check more stalls you can save 20 bath or more, but yes that will remain. Just enjoy, buy tickets and prepare for a holiday.

  9. January says up

    china airlines

cheap tickets, you can check the site daily, they often apply for 3 months, but please note the high season, is December and June until the end of August

klm is also stunting, booking 3 months in advance is enough there are many offers 500 600 euros in low season

  10. François says up

You have already done the most important thing: keep an eye on Thailandblog. Special offers pass by here regularly. I booked with Emirates at the end of June, after a tip on Thailandblog. Amsterdam-Dubai-Bangkok, end of January for € 506. Waiting time in Dubai 2,5 hours, so very acceptable. Since then only seen one cheaper offer.

€660 is not such a bad price in itself. Last year I lost €736. The big uncertain factor is currently the question of whether tourism will pick up or not. If that does not happen, the price of flights will drop a lot in a while, because the aircraft must of course be full. The real stunt prices are often limited to specific flight times or days. We fly on Wednesday-Thursday in January; if you are tied to the weekend, the chance of really cheap flights is smaller.

You are still very early. I'd wait a while and gamble on a passing offer. (But I accept no liability for following this advice :-))

    Dear Erlin,

you can look at the site of http://www.vliegennaar.nl.
On this site you will find eight providers, of which TIX.NL also provides a graph of the days in the month that are the cheapest.
If you tap on the bar of the graph, you will see the price and where to leave.
You can also specify an alert, for example I want a price below EUR 500, then you will receive an automatic message about this.

If one can book cheaper elsewhere, I would also like to know, usually it is an old dakota, with two propeller engines, of which the engines are lubricated with butter with an intermediate stop in Timbaktu.
    Success.

  12. computing says up

I usually look at momondo.nl they don't sell tickets but refer you.
The danger of watching too much is that your cookies will be saved and the airlines will see that too, I'm told, and then they'll raise the prices again when you watch the same trips over and over again.
I then look on a PC and book on another PC, I'm on the safe side.

Via Düsseldorf is usually cheaper, but when you travel back I found it difficult again by train.

    greetings compuding

    • francamsterdam says up

That manipulation with cookies is indeed bastard at its best.
I noticed that once when I was in the local public library (the NS still requires you to print your e-ticket and my printer didn't work).
I was on my tablet and on the library computer simultaneously. I had to pay more for certain plane tickets on my tablet than on the library computer….

We book well in advance every year directly with china-airways for about 650
It is a bit less comfortable and mediocre food, but for a dime you cannot expect to be in the 1st place, and the times are excellent, arriving in Bangkok at 06.45 am and returning to Schiphol at about 09 am.

it has nothing to do with time. It is best to look well in advance and regularly. The day of departure can make a difference. You better look up http://www.skyscanner.nl and set a price alert there.
Then you will receive an email when the price rises or falls. You then decide when the price is favorable enough to book. We are going to Bangkok in March for € 500 (with a stopover in Dubai) with Emirates. That's a good price for us. Good luck

  24. Pierre says up

it depends on when you want to leave, the holidays (Christmas) school holidays the tickets are just more expensive, I would just book Christmas 6-9 months in advance otherwise everything could be full.
I live close to Schiphol so from Germany or Belgium is not an option for me. more what do you want? EVA has more space in the elite class for 250 euros more on a return, personally I think that is more than worth it on a long flight, but on 5 tickets it is a big dent in the budget. it is also important with which plane you fly 777-300 (EVA) are the toilets more spacious than the A340 (China airlines) if you travel with children I would take a direct flight

    Erlin
If you say Dusseldorf, maybe the following combinations are possible. Depends a bit on what you want. stressed traveling or really the holiday feeling.
Alternative airports are: Frankfurt, Koeln/Bonn, Brussels. —> Amsterdam. Hard to reach and very bad parking.

Airlines from Dusseldorf: Emirates, Austrian, Air berlin — or Etihad, Finair or Aeroflot
Also possible but not obvious with Turkish Airlines. A stop over in Istanbul can / will be arranged by TAI with a tour / stay with the highlights of Istanbul.

From Brussels eg. With jet Air via India -> stop over in Mumbai or New Dehli or with Aeroflot via Moscow (Very cheap from 400 Euro). With Etihad or Finnair.

From Frankfurt and Brussels you can also fly with Thai Airways or from all airports mentioned with Malaysian Airlines.

it depends what you want. You can fly from multiple cities. I never fly from Amsterdam myself, but look at combinations, offers and what I want to do myself.
The last time via istanbul was really good.

Oh yes and what is the best booking time? -> Can't say anything about it. Booked two years ago at 9 o'clock in the morning for a flight at half past five in the afternoon. Return costs 380 Euro with Etihad. Last seat. Because I really was the last person to check in via the bussiness desk, I also flew bussiness class on the way there. You just have to hit it.

  26. Daniel says up

I booked a flight last month with Etihad from Amsterdam and back via Dusseldorf. For the promotional price of 509 euros. As a Belgian, there will be an additional price of 38 euros for the train to Amsterdam twice. I'm still waiting for Dusseldorf. At that time, the price at Etihad from Brussels was much higher.
It turns out that 4 days later I find the same price at Etihad for my flight from Brussels as from Amsterdam. If this promotion had started at the same time, I would have paid only 2 times 16 euros for the train to the airport in Zaventem and only an hour on the way.
I asked Etihad if it was possible to change the place of departure, Impossible, only against payment of 150 euros. The flight from Brussels and Amsterdam have a transfer in Abu and with the same flight to Bangkok.
The only advantage is that you can take 1 piece of luggage weighing 30 kg. If I want to fly further, I can only take 20 kg with me. So now I have to drag that 30 kg to Mochit bus terminal, and by bus to CM; I'm also looking for a travel case that can hold 30 Kg. I'm flying at the end of January

    • LOUISE says up

      Hello Daniel,

Just buy a “growth suitcase” (extra zipper in the entire lid) and believe me, it can hold much more than 30 kilos.
A soft suitcase is always better than an oyster.
And then on wheels and you are completely happy.

      Grab them.

I booked 2 tickets for 628 euros per person with Chinese airline. Period 19 January to 17 February.

    Hello
If you go with your family, I would book a direct flight, then you board the plane in Amsterdam and get off in Bangkok, no further stress. And with a stopover, you also want to have a drink at the airport. and or food , you should also include in the price .
We looked at skyscanner, and when our price was added we immediately booked directly with China Airlines, which saves booking costs, or however they describe it. And china airlines has good flight times.
My experience is that if you travel with several people , the price is cheaper if you book well in advance .
Pay attention, because the price differs on the same day, the same flight with the same company, differs from day to day, the same ticket can be more expensive on Saturday, then the same ticket the following Tuesday, and more expensive again on Wednesday.

It is quite difficult to determine for yourself what a good price is for high season in terms of flying. So the month of July/part of August and also around Christmas. As a family you are dependent on school holidays and the pilots know this of course. The prices are quite a bit higher than those of the 'smart' tourist who manages to book great prices in other seasons. On the other hand, we also know that there is a lot of offer on the Bangkok route. But what is wisdom now? I think that waiting for that special offer from said websites / newsletters and of course passing by Thailandblog is not wrong. Especially if you are a person who can handle that. If you get stressed, just booking for 660 is not even such a bad option.

I have booked 20 tickets for the period July 15, 4 to August 8, for an average of 620 euros.
With Austrian Airlines. From Brussels to Bangkok. With acceptable transfer times. Outward flight 14 hours. Return flight 16 hours. If you find a price like this, don't hesitate and book. especially when it comes to more than 4 people. Prices become more expensive the closer the holiday period approaches. Good luck!

  34. patrick says up

Also check where you buy. I planned my trip for January 2015, watched almost every day at one point. When I found a price Brussels – Bangkok h/t for 560 EUR via Abu Dhabi with a stopover of +/- 3 hours, I thought this was fine. Since I sometimes need a flight confirmation for my girlfriend's visa, I thought it only logical that I would book with the travel agency. So print out the offer and go to the travel agency the next day. The cost price was suddenly EUR 680. Well, it can happen, depends on the class division and whether there are still cheap seats available. So I just booked, because who knows next week again 100 EUR more expensive. I check again 3 days later for the same flights and the price was… 560 EUR. So gratitude for service costs me 120 EUR. Next trip I will book directly on the net anyway. 🙂

Booking tickets always depends on various personal things.
If you really have fixed dates there and back then it is different than for someone who doesn't care to be able to go 1 week earlier or later by the time they want to go.
Price is not the only driver for me which airline and ticket I book
Ticket conditions are also very important to me.
I always want to book freely changeable tickets.
Yes, they are regularly more expensive than non-changeable tickets.
I also already know that the tickets are FOC (Free Of Charge) changeable tickets directly with the airline.
And via a website Oa. SkyScanner, travel agency only changeable at cost.
I've often heard people rejoice that they were happy to sit in the seat next to me for less.
But just as many times I have heard people complain at the check-in counter or on board.
Nothing is possible with that &^*()) society.
Then I ask which booking class do you have?
No idea is usually the answer it was the cheapest.
I understand that especially with a family, the price is one of the main drivers of what you will book.
But there is a lot behind the booking class letter. And those are the booking conditions.
I never book before I know under what conditions I book.
    That could be many things
    – you may change your flight dates. No, FOC or at cost?
    - direct flight
    – how many kilos can you take with you
    – ticket validity
    – whether or not to save miles
So it is personal for everyone.
So you have to list some things that are important to you when booking.
