Reader question: Where can I take Thai lessons?

Dear readers,

Yes, it's going to happen. Previously retired and living in Thailand. It's still a year away but I have something to look forward to.

Now I want to use this year to prepare. That's why I also want to learn some of the language. Does anyone know if there are Thai lessons in the Assen area? Or another tip for learning the language?

Kind regards,

Bert

I am also interested. I live in Groningen and am also looking for a good teacher. I expect to emigrate to Thailand in 5 years.

So that's already 3 people who come from the area. Maybe someone from Thailand lives near here and wants to teach us the basics?

My girlfriend lives in Thailand so that is of no use to you. Perhaps an idea to “unite” you “the beginners” and learn something together. Stimulating and educational I think. I would be the first to take the NHA course, you have all the theory together. And if you master the basics a bit, get a Thai teacher.

Is a bit out of the way but good Thai lessons are given in Antwerp.

Doesn't seem like an option to me. You can also take lessons in utrecht and Almere, a little closer but that was too far for me. I also live in Drenthe and hope to move to Thailand in a year. I opted for the NHA course, which provides all the theory you could ever need, supplemented by a Skype teacher from Thailand for pronunciation and practical exercises. I had that for half a year and now, after a year and a half, I speak reasonably Thai. I'm still busy but I can do it all myself.

In the preparatory years I actively searched in English and Dutch through local advertising magazines for someone who wanted to teach me Thai. That eventually became the Thai girlfriend / wife of a Dutch man close to my workplace so I could easily go there after working hours. She spoke reasonable English and I wrote down my desired (what-and-how-like) words phonetically. When I really took further lessons in Thailand after a while, I could already produce about 1000 words well pronounced. That's half the battle. Not that statement but that stock in my head! Or you can also find 'teachers-to-be' through Thai restaurants in the area. These catering staff are often willing to earn some extra money during the day by teaching. Good luck!

Gentlemen from the north, perhaps this site is a temporary option, until you find a teacher.

    Hi Bart,
Attached is the link to “my” teacher. http://www.iwanttolearnthai.com/learn-thai-with-me.html

University educated, nice and punctual. Speaks fine English. Costs about 10 euros per hour. That is the advantage of a teacher in Thailand, see what you can get here for that price.

    Greetings and success

Many Thai people live in Groningen and Drenthe
leaving an advertisement at the thai temple in mussel channel is probably the fastest method.

      Hi Jeffery
I didn't know, it's been there since June I saw. Thanks for the info, like my girl too when she's here for a few months.

    Hello all,

Thanks for the responses. Very good tips included. And Ellie and Fred, if anyone else volunteers to teach us, we should keep each other posted, okay?

    Regards;

Learning Thai is not easy. And yet….. Was in Thailand for quite some time last year with wife and in-laws. The only person I could talk to then was my wife. But I wanted to talk to more people, which is why I sometimes spent hours with my father and mother-in-law listening to what they said. And with time I understood a few words. So slowly I started to say small sentences, just the simplest things. Many times I was helped, without ever being laughed at. Now I can gradually make myself understood and I understand what is sometimes asked. I can already ask questions myself. Albeit in the simplest sense, but it gives great satisfaction to both me and my Thai family. At first I had a hard time with how "short" some of the statements were, that I thought they were angry. Ex. pai ti job means going home. Well, father-in-law kept saying “pai”. It is customary in the south of Thailand to speak “briefly” without intending to be angry. It takes some adjusting, but once you get the hang of it……. If you show in Thailand that you want to speak their language, they will eagerly help you. So my advice is: just cross the shyness threshold and do it. Please note the dialects in the different places. Thai in the north is not the same as Thai in the south. Regards, Dre

The best alternative, if no real teacher is available. Or just as an extra teacher, this fantastic Thai-based internet lesson is.

    http://www.learningthai.com/books/manee/01.html

This 22-lesson book was used for decades by children of the first grade of primary school.
Converted now with sound and explanation of Thai punctuation to teach foreigners Thai. If you have mastered this, then you really have a good basis, which will help you!

Are you all interested in the verdict? Then only use “Read with Teacher”.

I have a good acquaintance living in Marum .
He is married to a Thai. She speaks good Dutch.
She has lived here for more than 10 years.
Perhaps she can help you further. Gr Dirk.

    Dear people,

You can learn the language yourself, but you only learn bastardized Thai when you live here.
Think of it as in the Netherlands, different dialects.

Here's a site where you get 34 free lessons to learn Thai from Dutch.

    http://www.freelearningthai.com/lesnederlands0mp3.htm

Use it yourself in Thaitrainer, you have to buy it, but the first 5 lessons are free.
Nice easy program in word and spoken language with various photos with translation of the daily use of vegetables etc.

Take a look at the following website for this very nice program.
All possible questions can be sent to the following address:

Email: [email protected] Home Page: http://www.wantana.com

Good luck with it and best regards,

    Roel

In my opinion one of the very best computer courses with a responsible didactics, see:
    http://www.highspeedthai.com
    and be convinced.
PSI have no commercial connection whatsoever with that organisation. We are convinced of the speed, quality and reasonable price.
