Dear readers,

We really want to visit The Golden Horse Temple (Wat Tum Ba Archa Tong) from Chiang Mai. Anyone have an idea how to get there? Or does anyone know a driver who wants to take us?

Greetings,

Kiki

This temple is located in the Mae Kham area, north of Mae Chain in Chiang Rai province. About 160 km from Chiang Mai. Been there several times, by bike from a village on the southwest side of the city of Chiang Rai (there and back 110km). If you want to make the trip from Chiang Mai – and want to return the same day – a taxi or rental car seems to be the only option. From Chiang Rai you can get to Mae Kham by bus that goes to the border town of Mae Sai, but then you have to somehow cover the last 5 – 6 km.

Read Mae Chan instead of Mae Chain……..

Thanks for the information Cornelis, think we opt for a private driver.

    Hallo,

Opposite Mae Ping hotel is Mr. K and his wife have been a good friend of ours for many years.
He can provide you a car and reliable driver he is reasonable in price. Good luck!

Great, thank you Christina. We have now found a driver, but will certainly use Mr. Keep K in mind. If not for this trip, then for another fun interesting trip.

Small correction, Cornelis. Mae Kham is about 225 kilometers from Chiang Mai, so not “just under 160 kilometers” as you say. From the city of CM to the city of CR is already about 185 kilometers.

If you take the main road to Chiang Rai and then Highway 1 to Mae Kham it is indeed around 225 km. My km number is based on the sign at Mae Chan that indicates the distance to Chiang Mai, via the 1089 and the 107, as 143 km, but looking at Google Maps this turns out to be incorrect. That route is even longer (and slower) than via Chiang Rai.
