Reader question: Renew Thai driver's license
Dear readers,
I need to renew my Thai driver's license soon, have it for 20 years now. Because this changes quite often I would like to know from someone who has done this recently, what you need at the moment?
Is there also a difference if you have moved to another province? How far in advance can you renew?
Thank you in advance for the information,
Other
Just extended last week in Cha Am area.
1 health certificate from a doctor.
2 declaration of home address, can be obtained from the local police, or bring a witness born and raised in your place of residence, or can be obtained from immigration, with recent supporting documents (electricity payment, internet, etc.)
3 copy of passport and residence permit.
I was lucky that there were just theory exams, so I didn't have to watch a long film of traffic violations in Thailand, but that seems to be an obligation these days.
Hand in old driving licenses and after payment and the usual obligations (photo, etc.) you can go for another five years. Good luck.
I renewed my driver's license in Chiangmai last week. I needed : copy of passport, certificate of residence [available at Immigration – form, copy of rental contract, copy of passport and 2 passport photos], doctor's certificate and a form to be completed. They take pictures themselves.
Hello, just renewed both my driver's licenses in Pattaya.
Your driver's license has an expiry date, possibly your birthday. You can apply for your new driver's license 90 days in advance.
In any case, of course, the now well-known Residence Form. I also had a copy of the passport (face) and a copy of the annual visa with me. I always do. And of course your passport. No passport photos.
Got the impression they only wanted the residence form and my passport.
I went halfway through the lunch break and got a tracking number. Two hours later I was out again.
Succes

Dear Andre
I also recently had to do this and went to Phitsanulok immigration for proof of accommodation, but the rules had changed and now I first had to get another form from the department of transport in my place of residence.
The official in question had never experienced this before and found it annoying that we had to go back to Phitsanulok (a 280 km return journey), so he extended my driver's license again for 1 year, so that when the visa was extended, we can take with you.
This has yet to happen so I don't know the outcome yet
success
I also just renewed my driver's license in Chiang Mai. On April 18th, but extended on
April 23. The new driving licenses are now valid until April 18, 2021, so almost 6 years.
Apparently the rules are applied differently everywhere.
On Samui: no medical certificate required
A statement from immigration, where you live and
copies of visa and passport.
I had to do responsiveness tests and a stupid one
watch an hour-long instructional film. Some kind of soap about it
"be a gentleman in traffic".
Wear long pants, otherwise you will be sent away.
Not properly dressed. A Thai with jeans
full of holes, it was OK. :O)
And so it happened to me at the Thai RDW or CBR whatever you want to call it in the capital of Lamphun a few months ago.
A doctor's statement or something like that, there was absolutely no question of that.
Copy of yellow home book , copy of passport , copy of both my Thai driving licenses .
That was it .
Just came in a nice pair of shorts and a t-shirt.
Also do the reaction and color test, watch the video.
And of course do not forget , because that is ultimately about paying the fixed fees .
Now for the time being again 5 years to be able to drive on Thai roads with small and big bike and pickup.

I actually had to renew my driver's license before 23-03 ( birthday ), but serious eye problems. Now have new lenses in both eyes and see everything again. Passed to that driver's license office in mid-April
banglamung. Was there early, had number 10 and was quickly upstairs to hand in everything. Then the test if you can tell yellow, green and blue apart. Waiting for a long time until you are finally called to the table to take a picture. Then 5 minutes and you're done. The special thing this time was that I got an extra year. Renewal requested after expiration date. Do you even have to come up…
I understand that you can extend from 2 or 3 months before the end date.
From the Department of Land Transport website
But I don't know if this website info is up to date.
http://www.dlt.go.th/th/index.php?option=com_content&id=3471%3Arenew&Itemid=88
As far as I read on this website you could extend up to 1 year after date without having to do any extra things.
However, things have changed lately I understand.
The PCEC does keep their website, most of the time, very up to date in terms of information,

another link,

In principle, you can have your driving license renewed at any office.
If you have a yellow (foreigner) house book, that is sufficient for showing the address.
But there can always be some difference per office.
I also have to renew my 5 year driver's license in November.
I wonder, on the website it seems so, if after the due date, you were not in Thailand before or on the due date, can you still just get your new 5 year old?
You can prove that you were not in the country with your passport stamps.
In addition to the other responses, if you have, you can use the yellow tabien lane as proof of residence.
In Rayong they also made me do a reaction brake test, depth test, traffic light and color test; no doctor's note required.
After the 1st year, an extension was obtained for 5 years and a little extra, namely on top of the 5 years until your next birthday.
Success, NicoB
