Thailand question: License plate
Dear readers,
A few years ago we bought a 2nd hand car with a special license plate in Bangkok. The car was then one year old. The first owner paid extra for that license plate. We want to sell our car now.
Do we have to go to Bangkok especially for that? We live 800 km from Bangkok. My wife wants to possibly transfer that special license plate to our other car as well. Is that also possible?

To your first question: in principle this is possible, you only have to sign a power of attorney with a copy of your ID and address and hand it over to the new owner with the blue car booklet.
However, the new owner can abuse this and fail to transfer the car and you will still be liable if something happens to the car, such as in an accident.
In addition. You can transfer the car in any province, it does not have to be the province [in your case Bangkok] where the license plate was issued. As long as you agree this with the new owner.
The consequence is that the old license plate must be handed in and the new owner will incur additional costs for a new license plate
In Thailand, the license plate follows the car, not the owner.
“Transferring” a license plate to another car, as your wife apparently wants, is at odds with the general regulations.
But maybe your wife knows how to fix a deviation from the rule? After all, Thailand continues to amaze 🙂
I just did the same thing but with a motorbike. Sold the previous one without number plate and then had it transferred to my new one. I'm not entirely sure but I thought it cost me 3000 Bath more than a new one with no choice then. I'm happy that I did.
