The visa exemption file states that hotel bookings and confirmations must be submitted for an additional 30 days. Now my question is what if you don't book a hotel but are going to stay with family or travel around and book hotels or resorts locally?
We stay with my parents-in-law and when we go somewhere we look for somewhere to sleep or we book something via the internet.

Which Visa exemption file are you talking about here?
You do not have to prove where you will be staying during your renewal. You may be asked to prove that you will leave Thailand before or at the end of the extension, ie within 30 days. This can be done through an airplane ticket or a hotel booking in another country.
In the new visa file it will read as follows:
Requirements for an extension of the Visa Exemption period by 30 days – costs 1900 Baht
1. Completed application form – Extension of temporary stay in the Kingdom form (TM7), recent passport photo.
2. Passport and a copy of the passport pages with personal details and the arrival stamp.
3. Financial resources of at least 10.000 Baht per person (even better is 20.000 Baht).
4. Immigration card (Departure card) and a copy of this card.
5. Proof (eg flight ticket, hotel bookings) that you will leave Thailand within 30 days.
This does not mean that you will have to submit all points. This depends on the immigration office or immigration officer. In principle, one will certainly ask for points 1, 2 and 4. However, it is quite possible that proof of points 3 and 5 will not be requested. However, we indicate what can also be requested, so that the applicant is not suddenly faced with any surprises.
