Hello all,

I am moving to Thailand soon. I also want to go there by bike. Now, of course, I would like to make grateful use of the new means of communication.

My question is which one is better for you in Thailand, Android or Apple. I want to use it for GPS, internet, (googlemaps) e-reader, Facebook and Skype to maintain contact with the Netherlands. Who knows what to do?

Regards,

BertH

My opinion: doesn't matter. If you don't have one yet, you definitely shouldn't spend a lot of money on something expensive. (Apple)

What you want to do are basic things, which you can do anyway. Google Maps is from Google (Android too), so that could be an advantage.

That is a bit of lead for old iron, just where your preference lies.

I always used a Samsung S3 with android, now iPhone 5S and in terms of functionality it is not that inferior.

Personally, I really like the camera in the iPhone 5S, both front and back. Really a big difference with my S3. But I don't know how the current models, S5 etc compare with an iPhone. Just know that it doesn't matter that much in terms of apps.

Samsung/android generally have larger screens, which can make typing easier and it is easier to copy your own files and music, for example. At Apple, everything has to be difficult via iTunes.

Some Android devices from Samsung, for example, can use 2 SIM cards, so you can keep 2 telephone numbers, 1 from NL and 1 from TH, or, for example, 1 of 12 call and 1 of True. If you are in an area where 1 has poor coverage, that can be easy, or you can call 1 and use the internet with the other.

Once you are used to Apple (iOS), the rest is a lot less. I swear by Apple. Is a bit more expensive but certainly more user-friendly and better.
My daughter had an iPhone, then bought a new Samsung, now regrets like hairs on her head.

    It's very personal apparently.

I had Apple, but that money factory stops servicing your phone after a certain amount of time and its apps can no longer be updated and if you actually break one, you can no longer install that app (or you have to jailbreak it and the original still have version). But too often the software says over time that it no longer wants to function on your Apple. So no more Apple iPhone or iPad for me (iPod still works fine, but my Android phone also works great with iTunes via the stereo in the car).

Now the question regarding Thailand. The most common apps are available on both systems. As far as I'm concerned, there's really no reason to spend that much on Apple. Unless you're sure you want an app that the other system doesn't have. One downside to Apple: they're so damn expensive… and thieves know it too! (Also in Thailand).

What are you using now? Use that in Thailand too.
My Thai girlfriend has an iPhone and iPad, her friends all have Android.
Google apps are popular here and of course the whatsapp variant Line. Everything works fine on both platforms.
Apple gives a worldwide warranty, so an iPhone purchased in the Netherlands that breaks down within the warranty period (can be extended to three years for an additional fee) will be repaired free of charge in Thailand at a recognized service center. Don't know how that works with HTC, Samsung or LG, for example.

Sorry, a bit off topic. You want to get around on a bicycle here? Please note that it is forbidden to ride a bicycle on the motorways and highways here. I think if you have an accident (not imaginary at all here in the traffic) you are not covered by your insurance, inquire carefully.

Well you can discuss the price.

Apple has few models, currently only the iPhone 5C and 5S. Android is used by so many manufacturers that it can be found on almost every model, so from phones from 100 euros to 500 euros, so to speak, but you also see that over time the models are no longer updated.

Only the top models of, for example, Samsung and Apple are not that much lower in terms of price. But if you take a somewhat older or less powerful model, then you are a bit better off with Android in terms of price.

I also played with Samsung's S4 in the store, but then I got the idea that it was a bit smoother, but otherwise much of the same. With the Apple iPhone, I just have the idea that it is a bigger step forward, the thing is smooth, the screen is very sharp, the sound quality is quite good, etc. The battery in an iPhone is less on paper, but it will last longer if it is from my old S3.

In terms of stability, my S3 was good, my Android tablet less so. I replaced it all with Apple and gave the Android stuff to my girlfriend.

By the way, there's one thing that sets Apple apart from the rest, and that's style. We Dutch are not that sensitive to it, but the Thai are. The number 1 gadget to have is currently the iPhone 1S, and of course also gold in color.

I also go for the Apple as a gift from my colleagues. I gave my husband a gift, didn't want to know anything about it at first, now I can't do without it. Get a mini with a lot of gb, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it. Wi-Fi spots everywhere.

I'm going for Android. All of Asia is full of Android. Android stands for ease of use. I get apps from eg http://androidworld.nl/, and of course Google Play. The whole of Thailand is then at your feet.
Apple is rigid, has strict control over the apps in the App Store and what you as a user can or cannot do. In addition, there are no cheap iPhones/iPads, as there are, for example, Android smartphones/tablets of €100 or less. Incidentally, it is not about Android and Apple, but about Android and iOS.

many free android apps are free where you have to pay for the same apple apps!!!
also the latest android version is 4.2.2. many times advanced than ios.
route planner (free) sygic is amazing!

Think outside the box and consider a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone (WP) 8.0 (8.1 coming soon).

Nokia's best navigation is available for free, which you can also use without internet (download the map in advance via WiFi, of course). There will be responses that WP 8.0 has fewer apps, but all major and necessary apps are available (at least everything you mention in your question).

The camera of the more expensive Nokias beats all iPhones and Android devices.

Jorg says what I think. I don't know of any better navigation than Nokia's. Only Nokia's Office is bad. Unless you get something expensive out of the closet. Really very expensive. If Office is important to you, you better start using Android. The other Nokia apps are fine.

Both my wife and I switched to Sony Xperia (android) mainly because the devices we have, the V and Z1, are waterproof. Here in Thailand, with the sudden showers, no unnecessary luxury. My tablet is also an Android (Sony), easy to sync. I personally find iTunes from Apple hopeless, with Android simple file transfer. I also print directly from my smartphone and tablet to my wireless Brother printer. There are now so many apps for Android that it doesn't matter much for the choice.

Lost my smartphone once. Then just follow my nose. Surprisingly, it performed very well. Classic ask for directions and you'll come across curiosities that can't be found on any app or site. What I want to give you, also trust your feeling and nose. Double pleasure!

I cycled around with an ipad-mini cellular. Fine. Off-line maps from Skobbler loaded off-line maps to pinpoint my position along the way. For off-line maps you need a type of iPad that can hold a SIM card. Read many books on it. Fine thing.

With an android device you also have a google account. You can use this to email, but you also have Google+. That is a kind of Facebook, but from Google. If you take photos with your phone, they are immediately saved as a backup in the cloud and can be retrieved anywhere at any time. You can also share them there.
I have both Apple and Android and I find Android slightly more pleasant for the phone. All your contacts are also saved in Google + and you can use them anywhere, including in Gmail. If you lose your phone or buy a new one, all contacts will be retrieved after logging in. and the iPhone actually only works optimally if your laptop/PC is also a Mac.
