Reader question: What can I do against sand flea stings?

Dear readers,

We have been coming to Thailand regularly for a longer period of time for at least 12 years. In recent years we have discovered Hua Hin and found it a pleasant stay there. Now we are back in Hua Hin from the end of December and for the first time we are suffering from sand fleas, of course on the beach. In the beginning we both even got flu-like complaints, that is over now, but those bites are very annoying. In the evening it starts to burn and itch violently.

Of course we have been to several local Pharmacy for medicines. We have Jungo-Ex 95 which is game with 95% Deet, which we inject before going to the beach or going out at night. In addition, we have Sanobet-N ointment against itching, Topiram against inflammation, Lemon grass balm, tiger balm and Kwan Loong, a medicinal oil that is good for everything. We also have pure vinegar and alcohol. It helps for a while, but not for long.

My question is there anything that can prevent you from getting stung?

We ourselves make a link with eating pineapple, could that influence your body odor so that you become "nice" for the fleas.? I doubt it, because even then we will be stung, albeit to a lesser extent. I would also like to mention that I already take allergy tablets myself, especially against sun rash, but should also help against reactions from insect bites. Unfortunately, this does not help enough either.
Does anyone know a solution for this and oh yes, not everyone on the beach suffers from it, unfortunately we do.

There is also the problem with the beds and umbrellas on the beach. On Wednesday there are no sunbeds for rent, we are on a part of the beach that belongs to an apartment and bought our own beds, but there was some consternation again this morning, we were not allowed to sit on the edge of the sea and had to go back to the top of the beach and why? No one can tell because then they don't speak English. With these kinds of measures, tourists are discouraged from coming to Thailand, we rent an apartment here, spend money and have to comply with different rules every time.

With kind regards,

Ria

A loco of a travel agency advised us to apply coconut oil for prevention and indeed, that made a big difference and was not too expensive and non-toxic.

    Rub well with coconut oil
    Also, don't wear perfume

I experienced this, went to the supermarket and bought a spray can from Bayer,
Not the one for mosquitoes, but one for ants, silverfish, etc. sprayed in a towel and the ground on which the towel was placed worked fine for me,
You can also spray your mattress for bed mittens with it,
I haven't seen any bed mitts but as a precaution,

Costs I thought around a hundred thbath

If you have been stung, corticreme is the ideal remedy. An ointment with cortisone. A good spray of DEET prevents bites.

  5. Ronny Cha Am says up

When I go to the beach in Cha Am and wish to walk or stand with my feet in the sand, I always use skelotene but the Shields version, not the lemon. Just found in the pharmacy and some 7-11.
It contains deet and I no longer suffer from it when using it. Forgot to use it??…Praise! And it really itches so much that I scratch them open in my sleep...

Dear Ria ….. Are they really sand fleas? I haven't seen them yet.

    Am curious. to the comments.

Know the nuisance from Nw. Zeeland and since 2 years due to the abnormal drought also in the summer time in Spain, where I also live..

In Spain (at home) I use the old-fashioned spiral tropical anti-insect against those "bitches" and if I still get bitten outside, I use an anti-itch product from China, which makes the itching completely disappear within a minute!

    thanks,
    gr. sabine

Just been in Hua Hin for 3 weeks and not been bitten once.
Apparently, not everyone suffers from this.
