Dear readers,

Next year I want to go on holiday to Thailand for 4 weeks. I want to do that end of March beginning of April. I have heard that school holidays start around this time and school holidays are at the same time all over the country. So that will be crowded on the beach.

Can someone tell me when the school holidays are in 2015? Please specify the exact date. I have about nothing. I don't know if the editors allow it, but otherwise I would also like to know what good places are to visit during this time.

Thank you very much everyone for your response.

Yours faithfully,

adje

    The April holidays always coincide with Songkran Festival, the Thai New Year. Songkran 2015 runs from April 13 to 17. This is followed by 3 weeks of holiday for primary schools; high schools are usually only off for 1 or 2 weeks.
    In addition, it is a misconception that the beaches would be overcrowded during the school holidays for several reasons:
    1. a considerable number of children in rural areas do not go on holiday at all because there is no money for it;
    2. some of the children live with grandparents or relatives and not with father and/or mother. During the school holidays, these children often go to their parents (or one of them) who live in a big city like Bangkok. My English colleague always has his wife's two children visiting during the school holidays (and sometimes goes away for a week). My neighbor always takes care of his son in the school holidays who lives in the south with his grandmother;
    3. a not unimportant part of the Thai people do not lie on the beach at all, but look for other environments. After all, they don't want to turn brown.

    There is even an advantage to vacationing in Thailand during school holidays. Traffic on the road is considerably less and therefore less dangerous, with the exception of Songkran of course.

      However, Jomtien beach and Pattaya beach are very busy, especially on weekends. The Thai then sit en masse on the beach (under the umbrella).

    That is not too bad with crowding on the beach because then this is the beginning of the low season, crowding on the beach is in the high season, say from November to March peak season from December to early January, with Songkran there are still tourists, but those numbers are negligible.
    The school holidays start at the beginning of March and usually end a week or 2 weeks after songkran (April 13-17), so all schools are open again at the end of April and the beginning of May. Well, you shouldn't think that there is a "construction trade" here like with us and that the Thais go on holiday en masse, during this period all Thais have a holiday with songkran (3 to 4 days) and then go back en masse to Isaan or the north to celebrate songkran with the family. After Songkran it is then low season (rainy season plus beaches become a bit more dangerous due to turbulent sea water).

    I have (in Nongkhai region) different experiences than Chris. My foster son is in class 6 of the lower years and has 3 to 4 weeks off in March and then at least 3 weeks in April until after songkran. Sometimes up to 7 weeks off in total. So it may be different locally but songkran is always in it.

    As for places to visit, March and April are the hottest months of the year and expect midday temperatures in Isaan to exceed 45 degrees. Look for wind and water, is my advice.

    I can add to the above that Thailand has about 1600 km of beaches, so it will never get crowded.

    I think March is still a nice month, warm but not too hot. April and May are the hottest months then it is better to avoid Thailand

    From next year, school holidays will start in May, because of Asean.
    These are the summer holidays and last, always have been, normally 2 months.
    Last year my son was home for 3 months because of the transition period to align all school holidays in Asean.
    From 1 Oct to 31 Oct there is a 1 month school holiday, harvest period.

    Dear All,

    Adje comes with the following question, which I am also curious about, with the following comment; I quote; ” Can someone tell me when the school holidays are in 2015? Please specify the exact date. I have nothing to do with about”
    No 1 answer gives a definitive answer to the question, is there no one who can give a concrete answer?
    I have an above-average interest in a concrete answer, as Adje points out: approximately is of no use to me
    I want to know whether the holidays in Thailand coincide with my children's holiday period in the Netherlands, so that we can have the nephews and nieces together again, which must remain a surprise of course, which is why I don't ask the parents. but hoped to find the answer here

    Thanks in advance,

    Lex K.

      You're absolutely right Lex K. No one seems to know. For one it starts in March, for the other in April and even someone says in May. I know that some readers of this blog are teachers in Thailand. Don't they even know? Or do they think it's a nonsensical question and prefer to discuss the Thai females? Haha. And to my question what are good places to visit in March / April, no one answers either. I'll have to make my own plan. And that will undoubtedly work out.

        Adje,
        I do indeed notice that very often you do not get a clear answer to a clear question, but you do get many personal experiences that, in this case, are of little use to you, but are often fun to read.
        There was a beach in Thailand and most Thais are indeed never on the beach, with exceptions, but they are clearly recognizable by the umbrellas and other means to stay out of the sun and those are mainly days people, there is plenty of room in Thailand, so you will certainly not get in each other's way, another advantage, in April it is not so busy with tourists, low season, so a wide choice of accommodation and prices are a bit lower, it is only very hot in that period, which is why it is also approximately in that period period are the Thai school holidays, but most Thai students just go home and help on the land or in the company, the concept of "going on vacation" is not familiar to most Thais, no money and no time and the wealthy Thais go to abroad (Europe and America).

        Have fun in Thailand

        Lex k.
