Home » Reader question » Reader question: Spotting pink dolphins at Khanom, who knows more?
Dear readers,
At the beginning of next year we will go to Thailand again and in particular to the south. I read something about the pink dolphins at Khanom. Can someone give us some more information on that?
We arrive in Surat Thani and can take public transport from Don Sak pier to Khanom (according to my information). But my question is whether it is already very touristy. Are there nice hotels? What is the name of the place where the dolphins are, and are there hotels in that region?
We also want to go to Chumpon, to the region that Lung Addi has described so beautifully.
Many thanks in advance for your information.
gonny
Hi Gonny,
Two years ago we made a trip to the Bolaven Plateau in Laos. During the trip we also made a boat trip to the 1000 island kingdom where the pink dolphins should be nearby. Unfortunately we have yet to see the first one, but the Bolaven plateau is worth repeating.
Greetings Cees Roi-et Thailand
Khanom is still in its infancy when it comes to tourism. Very little entertainment especially Thai tourists. There are several hotels in Khanom, just look at a few hotel websites.
Dear Cees,
You can go straight to Khanom from Surat Thani, you don't have to go to the Don Sak Pier first, you can take a bus or a taxi, a taxi costs about 1500 bath, there are several hotels in Khanom, I would check tripadvisor, some recommendations, find me, Khanom Hill, Aava resort, Leeloo Paradise or Leelo Cabana, something for every budget and there are more…. Tours are organized from Khanom to the Dolphins, it rarely happens that you do not see them. You can also see them regularly from the beach in Khanom just from your beach bed. I have a website with only information from Khanom http://www.khanombeachmagazine.com which you can check out for more tips on Khanom. Khanom is (not yet) very touristy and the beaches are beautiful. A number of resorts and restaurants have now been added, but that only makes it more fun so far. Have fun!
The pink dolphins are mainly seen during happy hour.
Khanom is a quiet town with beautiful beaches. Two years ago with a promo package, incl. boat trip to buddha island and to the pink dolphins, overnight on the beach in Chonnapha Resort Khanom. Lots of reviews on tripadvisor. You can contact them directly through their website.

Soon a translation in Dutch on this blog
Already stayed several times at Khanom Beach (Khanom Golden Beach Hotel) with a sea view. Also have friends living fairly close by.
Beautiful yet natural beach and quiet, though. But pink dolphins never seen one.
And after some hesitation, my friends also have to admit ... "never really seen it", only in the many stories.
Locally they are convinced of it, just bad luck… you never see them. Thai (super) belief.
Roland, Too bad you didn't spot them, but I can tell you from my own experience that I've seen them many times. Both just sitting on the beach and on a tour. And they really are pink it's not a myth. For more evidence for anyone who doesn't believe it, just check out Khanom Fishing Khun Lee's Facebook Fanpage or Toon tours. Or Google pink Dolphins, you will be amazed. Once again it's a pity that you never spotted them, they are very special to see, hopefully you will have better luck next time.
Hi Gonny, we stayed last Feb. 14 days in Khanom.
– both the town of Khanom and the coastal region are very quiet – the interior is very beautiful and green.
The locals are very friendly but speak little or no English.
There is 1 hotel in Khanom itself, but along the coast there are several hotels and bungalow parks - when we were there, most hotels and bungalow parks were almost empty. We stayed in Khanom Hill a small German/Thai resort. In the weekends we saw many Thai day trippers and students who come to the beaches in buses full from the big cities – that was nice. if you have more questions give me your email address. We did the tour of the pink dolphins and we also saw them - also look up
http://www.khanom.de.
At the end of June we flew from Bangkok with NOK to Nakhon si Tamarat. From there to the town of Sichon, See Stone Resort. Not touristy at all. Pink dolphins swam in front of the resort at the end of the afternoon.
Then went to Khanom. There we sat in Khanom Hill, beautiful. Super quiet, the beach for us alone.
Rented a moped through the resort and explored the beautiful surroundings.
A must to eat, ok not Thai, is at Ciao Bella, delicious. On the beach with a very friendly owner.
A few years ago, while waiting for the boat at Don Sak pier, we also saw a pink dolphin swimming. So really no superstitions.
The area around Khanom is still nice and touristy, hopefully it will stay that way for a while.
Hello Allen,
Thank you for your good advices.
