Can I get a rabies vaccination in Thailand?
Dear readers,
Normally I get all my vaccinations neatly in the Netherlands, well in advance. The rabies vaccine is now 3 years ago and will now have to be repeated. But as it turns out, because there is a shortage, the vaccine in the Netherlands is reserved for people who may have been exposed to rabies.
Is it possible to get this vaccine in Thailand? And if so, how to handle it?
Regards,
Mike
In Thailand, rabies vaccinations are available at most hospitals, at a much lower rate than in the Netherlands. After all, it is not reimbursed by health insurance in the Netherlands.
I do wonder about the need for vaccination. As long as you do not constantly visit caves full of bats, and you absolutely want to feed and/or pet dogs and monkeys, there is little reason for preventive vaccination.
Although rabies is prevalent in Thailand, very few people are bitten. If this is the case (even licking a dog can be dangerous!) you can always go directly to a Thai hospital to start with the anti-rabies shots.
I do not understand the reason that there would be a shortage of the rabies vaccine in the Netherlands because it is reserved for people who may already be infected with the virus. In the 1st place I rarely hear anything about infections in the Netherlands and in the 2nd place it seems to me that a vaccine is not the same as a medicine to treat infected people. In a response above, Jasper doubts the necessity of vaccination, but of course he is not aware of your personal circumstances and travel plans. And furthermore, I think I have read here earlier on the Thailand blog that in the event of an unexpected risk of infection, the treatment is less rigorous for people who have already been vaccinated. Rabies seems to be becoming more and more common in Thailand and also claims more victims every year.
Nice to take the injections in Thailand much cheaper, but if you return to the Netherlands earlier, you have to take the last one in the Netherlands because there is a period between the injections. Here 1500 per syringe in the Netherlands around 100 euros
Travel plans are not too crazy.
Thailand and Laos, but in Laos to my girlfriend's family.
On the internet I really read advice everywhere to vaccinate preventively.
Hence my question, can I get the preventive vaccination in Thailand
There is a clinic called Thai Travel Clinic, attached to Mahidol University in Bangkok where one can get many kinds of vaccinations. Verorab, against rabies, is available there for 373 baht I read.
See the link : https://www.thaitravelclinic.com
Very useful site thank you!
For rabies you first need an initial dose. This dose is a different and more expensive vaccine and I think it is listed as Rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG) (price depends on body weight).
The follow-up vaccinations and repeat vaccinations will be those of 373 bath I suspect.
Got bitten by a dog in Vietnam myself. Got the first anti-rabies injection there and the next one in an ordinary doctor's office in Pattaya. A few hundred baht.
