Dear readers,

I am concerned about a Thai family member who reacts more and more strangely to situations over the years and isolates herself more and more. I think therapeutic care would be in order.

It is a delicate issue, I suspect that bringing up the idea of ​​seeing a psychiatrist, psychologist or therapist with the person in question would be like detonating a bomb, it would be felt as a great insult both for the family as well as for the person himself. But still a question about it.

Does anyone have any experience with and/or knowledge of treatment from psychiatrists/psychologists in Thailand? I myself have the idea that there is little quality as in the Netherlands and that psychological problems are not taken very seriously here, but maybe the situation in Bangkok is a bit different.

I am curious and logically I mainly focus on the expats here.

    There is very good psychiatric care in Thailand.

    But also be prepared to dig deep into your pockets.

    BKK hospital offers all kinds of psychiatric care from which they can make a living in NL. Step in (or be brought in) and the care is there. Really very good!

    Count on a price of 110.000 Baht/night for the stay. Extra activities, therapy, treatments have to be paid extra for. However, the question was not about costs but about availability, and contrary to what the questioner thinks, the concern is there!

    That is 2.750 euros calculated at a rate of 40 Baht for one euro.

    I think you're better off going the family route.
    Then you will at least know whether you have it with you.
    In any case, arranging things outside the family is asking for trouble.

    We have been together for 16 years and have been through precarious moments. She had an attack of anger and jealousy about every two years. Went to mental hospital in Korat several times, needed medication and visits but it only got worse. Four years ago we were in Belgium and had another attack. Beatings and scolding, brought to Sint Vincentius in Antwerp and observed for three weeks.
    Conclusion "bipolar manus depressed", prescribed LITHIUM as medication and have not had any problems since. Reported this in Korat and now receives the same medication, free of charge.

    Any other kind of psych unit is inhumane and reminiscent of 18th century treatment vision and facility.

    This forum is moderated very strictly, but a comment “that there will be treatment on the moon” simply remains.

        The question was about psychiatric care. I KNOW from my own experience that a room in the psychiatric ward in the BKK hospital costs 110.000 Baht / day, excluding therapy, medicines, a walk outside, any extra security required.

        That link that Bert places is not about psychiatric care. I took a picture of that price list because I didn't believe my own eyes either. Now I can't post pictures here.

        But go and seek treatment on the moon, it will be a nice colony there…..

          Totally offtopic, this is about playing as a kind of 'moving judge', I dare to agree with Arjen. Just think of the High So and rich foreigners. EUR 3.000 per day does not play such a big role there. Certainly not if the care has a high reputation.

          An exclusive team of high-quality doctors and equipment(!) costs a fortune. Then EUR 3.000 excluding additional optional is best possible.

          The name of the hospital also comes into play. If they cannot offer this service, they are out of reach for a small target group.

          It will not be affordable for us and therefore implausible. Doesn't mean it isn't or can't be. I don't open a bottle of wine every evening for EUR 500 each, but there are people who can afford that. Also with this psychiatric help with admission to hospital.

    Thanks for the answers and possible addresses, nice to know that there are possibilities. But Paul Bremer does confirm my doubts about the skills, knowledge and (affordable) options here, even though there will undoubtedly be very good therapists.

    I may first enter such an institution for psychiatric care myself to see what the possibilities are.

    It is not yet extremely urgent, the family would not (yet) understand my action, but it is very unpleasant for those directly involved, not least for the family member who has no view of his own behavior.

    Have you ever thought about going to the temple/monks for advice?

    Advice from here is almost always accepted by the family.

    If you can express that you are worried about a family member and think of a 'clinic' as this will be the case in the Netherlands and ask the monk how he will feel about this; do/not do, which clinic and whether there are alternatives, the family will probably also see the need to act.
