Reader's question: Problems with ING debit cards in Mae Sot

Dear readers,

I live in Mae Sot part of the year and withdraw money from one of the many ATMs with my ING debit card a few times a month. This week it suddenly stopped working. I must have tried 20 ATMs from all kinds of different banks, because there was only 1000 Bath left in my wallet.

Of course I called ING and they told me that Mastercard, which manages the international ATM network for Cirrus, Maestro and Mastercard, has blocked some ATMs for foreign cards to prevent skimming.

ING referred me to an ATM locater on the Mastercard website: http://www.mastercard.us/cardholder-services/atm-locator.html
According to that website, the ATMs of the Krung Thai bank and the Bank of Ayudhaya in Mae Sot should work for foreign cards, but they did not.

According to the ATM locator, there are a lot of ATMs in the tourist areas that accept foreign cards and in the non-tourist town where I live there are only a few, so they don't work either. Strange, by the way, because it seems to me more obvious for the skimmer gangs to start skimming in tourist areas than in a hole where only a handful of foreigners use ATMs.

I had already resigned myself to having money transferred from the Netherlands via Western Union until my wife just got home and put her ING card in an ATM a few more times and, to her great surprise, received money from an ATM of the Thanachart Bank. Saved by the bell, shall we say.

I can hardly imagine that I am the only one who has encountered this problem. My question is whether there are others who have the same problem and/or whether this is also the case for debit cards from other banks?

Yours faithfully,

Fred

Seen the same story 2 weeks ago with a couple in pak chong. Money only came out at the 9th machine. With rabo pass..

Their world coverage was just on.

No problems with it myself, always use my kb account here.

Rabobank debit card in Lampang is no longer possible. A month ago in Chiang Mai, I pinned without any problems and now it is no longer possible in Lampang, I tried several ATMs. Called Rabobank and everything is fine with the card and bank account, no reason why the debit card wouldn't work.

    Hi fred.

Oh, to get the jitters with only 1000 baht in your pocket.
You say you live there part of the year.
Why don't you open a bank account?
Add an X amount as a buffer and continue using your ATM as you always do.
You always have money at your disposal, because I've heard that Western Union doesn't really do it for free either.

I have also tried a number of times to pin with rabo pass.
Activated 2 days before for Asia.
“Invalid amount” at all ATMs at different banks.
No money, even with a lower amount.
I just gave up and only withdraw money with my Thai bank.

    Dear Fred.

I also have ING and I transfer 1500 euros to my Thai account every month.
Then I can always have my money.
But since 14 days I also have problems with the ING I can no longer see my statements, and when logging out the program says that ING is not available, but that you can do internet banking. (strange)

And I have not been able to transfer money via the internet for a while. The Helpdesk told me to use a different browser, but I had the same problem with 3 browsers. I also tried it on my laptop, with the same result. Now they are asking me to use a different network. But what if it were because of that, I live in a village and there is only one internet company (TOT)

They had problems with the internet 14 days ago, after that I have problems
Are there others who also have problems with ING here?

    regards computing

Dear Compuding, it may also be due to your Windows version if it is XP you have a problem, or to the Explorer version if it is below 9 you also have a problem. It may also be due to your virus scanner, which may be blocking contact with your bank.

      good luck Cees

Dear Compuding, I have received exactly the same problem, the same reports and the same answers from ing.
I can still log in, see overviews and perform actions within my ing, but, very strange, can no longer access the normal ing site?!
It's a mystery to me, it may sound strange, but it's good to hear that others have the same experience, namely a hack or something similar. in my laptop, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Have asked ing a follow-up question, waiting for an answer, but don't expect much from it.
I also have TOT, it may well be that things are not quite right there, maybe it will resolve itself.
If I have news, I'll let you know.
        Nico B

Cees, I have excellent virus scanners and security and the latest version of Windows, so I don't think that's the cause.

See my response to Nico. It is the ING server that is making a mess. ING uses an Akamai Technologies server in the USA with the same IP Address. Google this address and look at Wikipedia, it will become clear to you.

I haven't experienced it in Thailand, but last month in Bali and couldn't withdraw money there. Do not pay with credit card in the shops either. Called ICS, Rabo and Amro and there it was flatly denied that there were any problems. And figure it out for the rest, how to solve that, was the response.

Just a tip about transferring money from Europe…

WU … Banks … charge a lot of fees …
WU gives very LOW currency value to the value of the country to be shipped...

    Therefore, send via TransferWise: transferwise.com

    1) High money rate

    2) As an example: when sending € 100, the exchange rate 2 days ago was $ 120 USD (so you get almost the daily exchange rate of your destination country)

    3) For the transaction I pay € 1 ... yay ... ONE EURO ... for a transaction of € 1000 ... I saw the costs: € 3 ... yay ... 3 Euro

    4) Transfer is faster than by bank.

    5) Transferring by e-mail is even easier, only the recipient is asked by Transferwise to confirm that he/she wants the money... and the sender is continuously kept informed by e-mail

    6) If Transferwise has to wait too long for an answer, then I get the 3rd day after the transaction whether I should refund the money … usually I ask them for a few more days … no problems.

SO : As soon as you make the money available , they will take immediate action and they will also email you WHEN the money is with the recipient .

    ps

When it comes to watching TV abroad…
Pay € 27 ONCE via tvizzy.nl and …. no more costs and wherever there is internet you can always watch TV for free …

      Tomorrow E v. Someren,

If only that were all possible.

We also have an ING account and here the bangkok bank.
Removing ING from the wall drives a person crazy.
Here ATM 200 baht, ING uh I thought 2.50 and a rate to cry about.

      Dear Mrs./Mr. V. Someren.

I think that a lot of TB people are now on the edge of their seats, because this has been a thorny issue for a long time and especially the course that those thieves give to customers.

      – Is there any restriction regarding the amount to be transferred to Thailand?

I'm going to dive right in and since I'm the biggest PC guy, I'm probably going to have a question.
So editors, please cooperate in this.

      Thanks.

Good tip for transferring money! Saw on the internet that Worldremit also has the same service. I'll definitely do it.

We had the same problems, tried all kinds of ATMs at the airport, like some other Dutch tourists. We had 900 Bath in our pocket, left over from last year (luckily I forgot to hand something out to the Thai family when I left last year), we also called ING, etc., but if you opt for 'without conversion' then you have no problems more, has been our experience.
I hope it works for you too, good luck.

    Problems with ING galore!
The one time you can't withdraw money and when you ask for information you get the answer that it should just go, but nevertheless nothing, nowhere.
Other times there are problems logging in and you have to be patient and other times maintenance work is being carried out.
Every week there is something “to do” at ING.
Apparently not a lion but a mouse that roars!

It's just terribly annoying when something you rely on fails so often.

  10. Other says up

This is the response I received from ING:

In your e-mail you indicate that you cannot use your Debit Card in Thailand. We understand that this is annoying for you. You indicate that you have activated the Debit Card for worldwide use. We would like to respond to this.

Abroad, you can pay with your Debit Card and withdraw cash at ATMs with a Maestro or Eurocard/MasterCard logo. In some countries, the old Cirrus logo appears on vending machines. Even then you can go there.

Your Debit Card has an EMV chip. EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard and VISA. This is a new international standard for payments and cash withdrawals with debit and credit cards. Unfortunately, the EMV standard has not yet been adopted all over the world. Your Debit Card is therefore not accepted at all payment terminals and ATMs.

If the problems persist, you can contact our ING Emergency Line. Our ING Emergency Line is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day on telephone number +31 20 22 888 00.

If there are no other payment alternatives, you can request Emergency Cash via our ING Emergency Line. Emergency Cash is there if you need money abroad immediately. Within 45 minutes cash will be arranged in the country where you are. The amount is a maximum of 2000 euros per transaction. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This service is free.

Do you have any questions? On ING.nl you will find specific information about using the Debit Card outside the Eurozone. Use this link for that.

Fortunately, I had alternative means of payment with me, which is also useful when you travel.

    Dear All,

    I can join you.

My ING internet has also only been working halfway for the past 14 days and you cannot see a balance, BUT, I have discovered that if you go all the way to the bottom of the site and click on "additions and debits" you will see your balance and of course the and depreciation, fortunately.

The "transfers" also work at the bottom, let's hope that the transfer abroad also works, I did fill it in, but have not yet received a response from my Thai SCB. The ING website states that they are "working" on adjusting the website, but they should not do that, because it will not help us in any case.

    • theos says up

@ nico, I found out, after a lot of Googling and via Whois, that ING uses a server with the name of Akamai Technologies Inc., 8 Cambridge Center, Cambridge, Maryland USA, postal code 02142. If you search where ing.nl is registered then come you from this address. Both have the same IP Address.
Have sent countless emails to ING and they tell me to update my browser, you idiots. ING.nl is also not accessible with Firefox and 3BB and on other computers. Send a complaint to the Dutch Banking Association ( NVB ) and the Complaints Institute for Financial Services ( KiFid ), via their website. Don't resign yourself to it because ING doesn't give a damn.

Apart from the fact that it is wise to use an ATM and with a VISA card? Leste learned that you don't run completely empty and then just rely on an ATM from a Dutch bank. Open a Thai account, transfer money via Swift via interbank rates, and do not empty it but, for example, top it up at 50,000 baht

For internet banking at ING Bank I always use TAN-Codes received on my mobile phone.
From one day to the next I can't receive TAN Codes on my mobile and therefore can't transfer money to pay bills.
Called ING and told them what's going on. Advice I get is to reset the phone and transfer money again. Unable to receive the TAN Code and therefore unable to transfer money.
The ING Bank blocks my access to my account and will send me an activation code and a TAN-Code list by post. That was promised to me almost four weeks ago but received 0,0 so far.
Called ING last Friday and explained that they do work with an outdated security system and that it is very easy for employees at the post office to intercept the Activation Code and TAN Code List. I am advised to call again next week to see if I had received the lists by now. I have not been able to view my statements of credits and debits for almost 4 weeks. I'm curious when I can finally have my own account.

I also had it a few weeks ago and they were complaining about my browser not being good, also via iPad but luckily I was able to withdraw money. I advise everyone to always take an alternative option.

Hello, people with problems with the internet, logging in and viewing data at ing.
I also had the problems, browser error, update explorer, etc., acc.
Today everything works again for me, without any changes. browser, browser, etc.
So the error was with ING or perhaps with TOT.
I hope it works for others and that this is the same for the atm pinners.

Logged in today 7-12-2014 and I can see my balance and transfers in a normal way, as before.
Only when I log out do I no longer get that screen asking me to fill in those stupid questions.
He then says Sorry ING is not available try again later.

I hope it works for everyone again

is an ing error have been this way for several years even here at the bank at the ing
they must declare this to the bank in thailand to ensure that it runs smoothly
    but I don't think it's that important
I now have a sns pass and it works
seems to be some kind of code
a lot of ing customers suffer from this, especially with a new card

  18. mr.bojangles says up

My girlfriend in India regularly has the problem that she cannot withdraw money with my debit card.
This is due to a malfunction at Equens. They then have a problem with the connection abroad. So it's not about the card or the bank. I got this knowledge from bank employees. (ABN AMRO). Such a malfunction usually lasts a few days, and occurs at least once every 1 months.
Of course I get a call if they cannot withdraw money for a few days and nowadays my first question to the bank is, after explaining what the problem is: whether there is a problem again at Equens. With debit card you do not make a direct connection with the bank, but Equens is among them.

  19. theos says up

I also have an ING debit card and the same thing happened to me. no money from the ATM.
Calling ING and a lady said it would be looked into. Called again the next day (was potty loose) and got a gentleman on the phone. This one said 'hold on, I'll have a look'. You know what? Withdrawing money via the ATM had changed, not using the Savings button but the Current button on the ATM and sure enough, that's where my money came.
It's a big mess at ING. The ing.nl website has also been unavailable for 5 months and they are not doing anything about it, something with their server, so transferring money via the internet is also not possible, nothing works. For those who want to send an e-mail to ING, you can do so via [email protected] through your email provider.

    Dear Fred,

I can assume that such a thing happens to a tourist, although, if that tourist is a bit smart, he also has enough Euros with him. But as you write yourself, you always stay in Thailand for part of the year. Just open an account here, put enough money in it and you will be relieved of a lot of misery and costs. Don't be afraid, your hard-earned money will not go up in smoke, you even get a better interest here than at ING. If you enter a large bank here and you first open a “FIXED” account with a substantial amount on it, they will not refuse you and it also has the advantage that, if you want to apply for an annual visa later, you already meet a condition suffices and that is: having enough money. After that you also open a “saving” account with enough money on it with which you can bridge the time you stay here and you have lost a lot of transfer and other costs. You will then receive a payment card, can do internet banking …. why make it difficult when it can be done easily?

My girlfriend and I are traveling through Cambodia and have the same thing. Can only get money from ATM with credit card at a cost of 4.5 euros per time. Called the emergency number and they found it strange. But they indicated that they are working on it and will refund any necessary credit card costs incurred.

ING made a mistake by charging the costs separately and not processing everything in one as usual, so that the customer cannot see the costs.

On December 10. Arrived in Thailand in 2014, we also cannot withdraw money with both ING and SNS cards.
Finally arranged money through Moneygram but the 1st day of our holiday was swallowed up but also ruined.
Don't ask me which ATMs we've all tried, but there were countless in both Bangkok (at Suvarnabhumi International Airport but also at Don Mueang National Airport) and Udon Thani.
What a mess with those banks!
