Home » Reader question » Reader question: Problems with my laptop during my stay in Chiang Mai
Dear readers,
Soon I can go back to Chiang Mai for 4 months. Previous times I always noticed that my laptop started having problems the longer I was there. Lots of lag, stuttering, and the need to reboot repeatedly. When you return home, a specialist is needed who knows how to solve some of the problems.
I use AVG virus protection. I use my laptop, currently an Asus (intel core i5) for email, LINE, looking up information and sometimes listening to music.
Does anyone have an idea what the reason is and what to do about it? the only thing I suspect myself is using google-thai?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Frank
It could be related to the heat. If the laptop gets too hot because the cooling is not working properly or the ambient temperature is too high, the laptop will slow down.
Thank you Kuhn Peter,
the problem is not simply slowing down, I am usually a patient person, but rather poor functioning. a little less every day. Programs start with problems or sometimes don't start. Closing where they sometimes linger somewhere endlessly where they previously managed to do so in a few seconds. Sometimes the whole machine would not boot properly and I had to try 2-3 more times. Those problems will not be gone when you return to our much cooler Netherlands. Then a specialist has to reinstall all kinds of things and run cleaning programs. 3 x was the final answer then, I don't know what was wrong, but now he is doing reasonably well again…. in one case that really wasn't reasonable enough and I bought a new one. Now I try to avoid that inconvenience.
Best,
the heat and humidity can indeed negatively affect the processor.
If you are on public networks, AVG (free?) is not the best protection, you never know what kind of idiots are also on here with bad intentions.
A ccleaner (free) can also solve many problems for some, especially if you have the registry cleaned up. Greetings
thanks Happyelvis,
I have a paid version with a complete package of AVG.
And the registry has been cleaned and 'repaired' with some regularity. .
I suspect it has something to do with Google.th? Certain things are also blocked on this I think?
Buying ventilation to put your laptop on is the most important thing.
And a good virus scanner (e.g. Eset) can't hurt either.
The only person who can say something meaningful about this seems to me to be the specialist who has (partly) solved the problems.
Thank you, I also consulted him and his answer did not get me any further. He is clearly a good IT expert, but not a man with travel experience in tropical countries.
Hi Frank
I would suggest you go to Panthip Plaza and ask for Mr Khong on the 2nd floor. A nice guy who can certainly repair your portable for a good price and who also speaks good English. I know a thing or two about computers, but I wouldn't experiment myself.
If you want, you can say that Adrian sent you.
Thanks, noted. I know Panthip Plaza of course, the art is there to find the right man. found with this one!
Advice, You can ask advice at Phantip Plaza, located at the night market, are very helpful
in troubleshooting and repair,s
greetings and success
a.Consider an SSD card
b.Consider another operating system eg Ubuntu
The open networks here (and I include the networks in guesthouses and restaurants that use their own name or phone number as a password) are not very reliable in terms of security. I also use AVG, but never such a network outside the door. When I'm not at home I use my phone to access the internet. Not always super fast, but safe. Line, I had a blue Monday on my phone, but sends so much junk that I just threw it off again. I've never used it on my laptop.
Thanks, I only use the network in my house. not outside the door. And Line remains handy (also on my mobile) because all my Thai friends use it (for free). This is how I also communicate with them from the Netherlands. And yes, a lot of advertising comes in that I get rid of every day.
AdwCleaner is a handy free program that can remove a lot of adware, toolbars in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome, browser hijackers and other potentially unwanted software (PUP) from your PC.
I recommend as 1st aid in case of delays. AdwCleaner does not protect against viruses !
In addition, every PC with Windows slowly clogs up.
An SSD hard drive is many times faster than a traditional drive, so your PC or laptop only needs 20-30 seconds to boot. And the prices of these are falling.
You will therefore no longer suffer from the slow silting up.
Two things:
Buy a cooler that you put under your laptop.
For example, download Cleanmaster and “clean” your laptop daily.
Saves a sip on a drink.
Thanks, after reading all the advice, I will do this too. especially the cooler. It hadn't occurred to me as a possible cause before. My internal cooling is good and clean. but I work with my laptop on a support, so that when unfolded 180 degrees, it raises the screen. Much better for my back problems. I work with a separate mouse and keyboard. But…. the cooling opening is then more closed than when I open the laptop to 5 degrees. So I will no longer open it in 90 degrees and run a cooling.
Dear Frank
I use a 10 year old Toshiba laptop and have had 2 cooling problems.
There are plenty of videos / examples on Youtube how to clean the cooling of your Laptop.
Don't you dare to open your laptop at the bottom?
If there is dust in the refrigerator?
A simple solution is: Turn on your laptop top, use a vacuum cleaner without an air attachment
exhaust of your laptop only 1 to 2 sec at a time and repeat that several times.
The i5 is probably just getting too hot.
My laptop always stands on 4 soft round rubber caps of 2,5 cm thick so that there is always enough air
under can.
Never put your laptop on a tablecloth!!!!!
And use ccleaner
Put the laptop on a notebook cooler, cables between notebook and cooler and a large fan takes care of it
additional cooling.
Never again a laptop in Thailand for me…
Years ago I bought an expensive Asus Laptop in the Netherlands….
Soon also got problems due to the heat and even a cooler underneath couldn't help anymore and it even got so bad that I got horizontal and vertical colored stripes on my screen...
Also, one of the hinges broke off leaving me with a loose screen 555
Then I only bought a PC with a separate screen and I have never had any problems in all the years that I have lived here, not even when it was very hot here (39 degrees)
Perhaps it is worth considering making a system image of the properly working system on a USB stick?
If the laptop becomes slow again, you could restore the copy.
(While preserving your documents, of course. I don't know how to do that, but it might be a tip.)
Is the cooling fan (still) free of dust?
I've seen fans completely clogged up.
Unscrew the cabinet and blow it clean with compressed air.
Possible causes:
1) Heat from the environment that makes cooling difficult (and forces the processor to a slower clock speed?).
2) Hard disk that gets more and more 'bad sectors' due to the heat (and that will try to move the 'lost' data in the background).
3) Insects and spiders in the laptop (unlikely to slow down).
4) Malware and other poisons for the laptop.
What to do:
1) Cooling! Provide a fan (possibly small thing via USB)
2) Beware of public networks.
3) Install Avira instead of AVG, which is a bit faster.
Dear Frank,
the problems only occur in Chiang Mai.?
I am also in Southeast Asia for several months a year and always take my laptop with me.
I only have problems with internet.
But that depends on the signal
I do use a prepaid SIM card
If I have problems that are not related to the Internet, I go to a PC store in a large shopping mall and ask for advice there
But maybe your laptop needs a cleaning
I have it done in the Netherlands online at Guidion
Succes
For about 300 bath you can buy a cooler pad, your labtop on it, USB plug in it, and the labtob is cooled by 2 fans, works fine.
A fan blade with USB connection under the laptop and possibly. clean the fan, in addition to using the CC-Cleaner (free) program mentioned. I also use Advanced System Care myself (there is a free and paid version). Via MS-config (tap in the search box) you can see and disable what is being started and running services: disable unnecessary things.
Dear Frank,
I don't know what operating system you are using. I am using Windows (10). With older versions you can also make a system image on an external hard drive via the Backup and restore menu. These are now for sale for a few tenners. I always make such a copy when I go on holiday to a less "stable" country. I take the external hard drive with the copy optimized after cleaning the laptop before creating. If something occurs that can no longer be maintained, other than a minor crash, I reset the entire laptop to the situation per date of making system image at home.
This solves all problems at once. And what's more, you can repeat this recovery method several times during a holiday if necessary.
All very relaxed.
Regards,
Joost M
Is Frank in Chiang Mai without air conditioning or something? Otherwise, of course, it has nothing to do with the temperature.
There is probably some malware that has slipped in between, and is not removed by the virus scanner and a cleaner.
If you simply store your files and photos, etc. in the cloud or (also) on an external disk, it is best to do a completely new installation of the operating system on a reformatted disk.
Otherwise this will probably remain an annoyance.
.Thanks, my house has air conditioning, but I rarely use it. There is no malware in my computer, it is protected and cleaned.
You could turn on the air conditioning once, and if the problems do occur again, then it is not the cooling.
And as for that malware, the only malware you can suffer from is of course that malware that gets through the protection and is not cleaned…
Many here blame your problems on cooling.
I don't believe in that. I also often use my laptop (ASUS) in TH. But it's not more than listening to some of my music or watching a movie.
Occasionally at a hotel with WiFi I want to turn on the internet to check the mail. And then I turn it off again. And no problems with slowing down system.
Not even from the refrigerator.
So I think it is the security of the various WiFi providers where you log in.
So you should think about using it. Can't you use the internet with a tablet? or smartphone? I often use my tablet for that.
It partly depends on what you do differently in Chiang Mai than in the Netherlands. I recently had an acquaintance who also suffered from delays. What did he do? He liked to watch free sports on his laptop. The web page filled the laptop with spam and other junk.
I have tested it. Installed Windows 10 on his laptop, which ran fine. Then one by one preferred web pages started.
Each time the problems came back to one and the same web page. They were so insecure that I even had to reinstall Windows.
Since he doesn't use that page, there are hardly any problems.
In addition, if you have Windows 10, you are well protected with Windows Defender and CCleaner. Defender requires much less than an AVG or Avira or any antivirus program from your PC and it offers good protection against viruses and malware. Don't use CCleaner too often, but it certainly helps to keep your PC clean after an installation or uninstallation.
As for the heat. Yes that can have an influence, but only when you put your CPU to the limit (for example in games). When browsing the Internet, it is negligible.
The security of the various providers? See Defender! You could install another anti-malware program, but I'm not that crazy about too many protective programs. These in themselves slow down the PC and in normal use, the home resources in Windows 10 are sufficient.
Thanks, I don't do anything different on my computer in Thailand than in the Netherlands. and I don't play any games other than sometimes a little chess or I lay a ticket. After everything I read, the temperature will be the problem and therefore the solution.
I use a support that raises the screen, with a separate keyboard. Better for my back. but then the laptop is flipped open 180 degrees and the cooling vent is much more closed versus when I flip open in 90 degrees. So I buy a cooler and will use (make) another mount so that I use the 90 degree angle and the vent is more unobstructed.
