Reader question: missing a nasal bone in Thai?

Dear readers,

There was an intriguing comment in one of the previous reader's questions about eyewear in Thailand. Namely about the lack of the nasal bone in Thais, or maybe only in Thais from the Isaan.

I've searched the internet, but 'nasal bone' actually only comes up with Down syndrome, kickboxing and sniffing drugs. But nothing about entire populations that would naturally not have a nasal bone.

I myself think that Thais do indeed have a nasal bone, but that it is just different in shape.

Can someone provide more clarity on this. Maarten Vasbinder, for example?

Regards,

Rene Chiangmai

I think the 'nasal bone' is the cartilaginous projection of the much larger septum, which we all naturally have. So it is not a separate bone.
Whether mankind started with the projection and it later disappeared in some or whether we started without it and it was added later in some I dare not say.

Everyone has, of course, a nasal bone. As Frans indicates, it is a cartilaginous protrusion. During evolution, the nasal bone has become larger and longer in humans living further north, with the useful purpose of preheating the cold air before it enters the lungs. At least this is the prevailing theory, because why Eskimos have not developed such a nose, the story does not tell.

If you look around in Thailand, you occasionally see people where the cartilaginous protrusion is much less available / or developed than in the majority of the population.
The Thai then speaks of “Mai mie dang”, while the farang quickly speaks of a missing nasal bone, which, as already described above, is also not entirely correct in my opinion.
Because it is seen more in Asian countries, I don't think it is typically Thai or Isan.

What bothers me is that an increasing number of Thai ladies think that their nose should look more like the nose of Westerners. The number of nose operations where an extra “nasal bone” is placed is increasing enormously. Plastic surgeons have their hands and wallets full of it. Western domination also continues in “how to look”. A pointed nose and white. Too bad. I like those noses, those eyes and that brown. Unfortunately, the advertisers have far too much influence. "It should be forbidden". Just watch Thai television for a few hours. Then during the commercials you see imperialism in all its glory through all those messages about how you should look.
