Home » Reader question » Reader question: How can I visit Dutch/Belgian prisoners in Thailand?
Dear readers,
I am currently on holiday in Thailand and would like to visit a detainee in Bangkwang Prison in Bangkok. Is there anyone who can tell me or otherwise guide me in how I can find out which Belgians / Dutch people are currently detained in Thailand, in which prison and in which building?
The embassy will not help me further due to the prisoner's privacy reasons. This question may have been asked somewhere before, but I couldn't find it. I would like to see as many links and comments as possible.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Gerard
I should mention right away that this morning I arrived in front of a closed gate at Bangkwang Prison. There I was told that no visits were possible for “friends” and that I can only apply for a visitor scheme through the embassy if I am family. So I can't get any further.
You cannot get in without help from the embassy and the embassy is not allowed to help you.
Your efforts are commendable, but I fear that you will have to accept this for the time being.
For next time you may be able to prepare earlier and perhaps you can get further through the cluster head of consular affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
See

and the link to the article in the Volkskrant there.
Also have a look at this site:
http://loesinazie.punt.nl
The information you will find here is hopelessly outdated and therefore not helpful.
It really applies to the Bangkwang that you can only visit with a letter from the embassy.
And that only applies to family.
It is also not possible to hand over goods as stated on the website.
Only ordering groceries in the prison shop is possible.
Please note this info is only at the bangkwang.
How it is at the other prisons should be inquired at the relevant locations
Apparently, Bangkwang Prison has a strict entry policy.
I've visited both Phuket and Khon Kaen, (always nice, when you have those good acquaintances, and they're always there when you drop by, and they're always happy to see you… if you bring some) but the prisoner's name and my passport sufficed for a visit.
But what is not entirely clear is whether you ended up having the name of someone you wanted to visit.
I can imagine they won't let you in if you don't even know who you want to visit.
A prison is simply not a tourist attraction.
The rule is that, in principle, only family members can visit a prisoner.
There are also fixed visiting days per building.
If someone leaves family, a visit from a 2nd is not possible on that day. If it comes at the same time, it is possible.
A letter from the embassy is also required.
Occasional visits from prisoner by
tourists is almost impossible.
Going to a prisoner unprepared is therefore impossible with the bangkwang
Been several times without the help of the embassy at the invitation of the detainee
Hi Gerard, would it also be possible Nakhon Pathom prison. Is 20 km away from bangkok ? Regards Anita
Then you can hope that you know a different route than via this bridge that was hit this morning.

Many years ago we went with 4 people to José Sonneveld, because the men's prison was not open then. At the women's prison it was no problem, the four of us were allowed to join.
No one was family or friend, we had never seen her, we had to talk to her by phone behind 2 windows and 2 bars, we had to show passports and it took at least an hour before we were allowed to visit her.
Certainly the prisoners like it, I don't know whether there are also Dutch or Belgians.
And first inquire whether it is visiting day that day.
Greetings and a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year.
Much closer is the Bangkok Reprimand prison on Nawamin rd. There is another prison right next to it, but the name escapes me. They are also in Nonthaburi. Not so far from The Mall Wong Wan 2n the Pong Phet intersection.
