To Myanmar, which currency?

Dear readers,

I asked a question here a few weeks ago about a trip to Myanmar. Thanks everyone for the great information, but my question is still: should I bring dollars or euros, or can I use my Visa card there?

Thanks in advance and happy holidays.

Regards,

Martin

I was in Myamar few months ago and only had Thai baht with me. No problem. Money is money.

Take US$ with you, at least you can exchange it everywhere for the most favorable exchange rate.

Please note that all banknotes are new. Although the central bank decided some time ago to also accept notes with a fold, etc., this is not yet acceptable at a lot of branches and street exchangers.

I was in Myanmar this year you can exchange money in euros or dollars. But make sure when you go out that you exchange your money because it is no longer worth anything, for example a shop at the airport for dollars because in Mandala on the airport upon departure there is no bank I'm sure of that. And a visa is very easy to apply for via Kes visa. And everything is good buy. Have fun.

I could get money there 30 years ago in Rayong center but I don't remember if it was with Maestro or my Visa…
in the meantime a lot has changed in “Burma” which is now called Myanmar and the capital Yangon.
The junta has now been put aside and so I suppose this country is also moving forward.
I just looked up a hotel and at the bottom you can choose to pay with VISA or Mastercard so this substantiates my claims that the country is becoming more and more of a modern nation…

To be really sure, you can email an embassy for this information as well.
    Success!
The country is definitely worth it and the people are extremely friendly and speak fairly good English

In October of this year I traveled through Myanmar. For 50 and 100 dollar bills you get the most Kyats. Euros can be exchanged but at a less good rate. Credit card is only accepted in the more expensive hotels and restaurants. You can also use a debit card in many places, especially in tourist areas. In the less touristy areas you have to make sure you have enough Kyats.

You can use Thai bath, dollars and euros at all official banks.
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT do business with people on the street who offer you very nice price offers. You are 100% being duped. So be warned

It's been 2 years since we were there.
    Then brought nice new dollars.
But almost everywhere you can pin kyat, with a visa card.
The only thing we used the dollars for was to pay for hotels.
Came home with a big pile of dollars.

Have fun, there is a lot to see and meet lovely people,

Euros are fine, but still dollars and undamaged
Burmese money is worth nothing outside Myanmar
Do not change bats at the airport in Bangkok

Last October/November we traveled in Myanmar. We had dollars with us just in case. That turned out not to be necessary. There are now enough ATMs where you can use your debit card with the Maestro logo. The extra costs charged for debit card payments vary per bank.

Bring cash dollars. In 2016 was in Myanmar in 14 days. In retrospect, I regretted not taking more dollars with me.
The hotel wanted to give a big discount when I pulled out my brand new dollars.
Debit card did not work everywhere (rabocard), but the credit card did. (expensive) If I go again I will take more than cash dollars with me. They simply love it!

Was in Myanmar for 11 days in February and always exchanged euros at a money changer. If you first have to exchange euros to dollars and then to kjat, you have two exchange rates and I don't think this will make that much difference between exchanging dollars and euros. In the bank they only wanted to exchange 100 euros per passport and day. With moneychanger no problem to exchange 200 or more euros.
If you want more information you can always email me at [email protected] .
Have applied for my visa in bangkok.
    Have a nice holiday
