Reader question: Is the drug Sumatriptan available in Thailand?
Dear readers,
Since we are planning to stay in Thailand for a longer period of time, I have a question regarding medicines.
I have cluster headaches it's not very common. Chances are small that there is an expat who also has that. but maybe Tino Kuis knows?
My question is: is Sumatriptan SUN 6mg/0,5ml solution for injection available in Thailand?
If so can I buy it myself at the Drug store? Here in the Netherlands I get it complete with injection pen.
Kind regards.
Kees
Both the nasal spray and the compresses are already available.
Be sure to take the recipe with you, which mentions the substance name.
Small correction to post above regarding the nasal spray.
Got that info from an acquaintance from CNX. Questioned him again: forgot to mention that his pharmacist ordered it online, and not in Thailand. So it is imported, and you will notice that at the price. Just mention this; it may be an option to order necessary medication that is not available in Thailand through a reliable channel, the pharmacy, from the manufacturer.
Then make me wonder whether you think it's worth it, if you can also take it with you from the Netherlands... Will it cost you money in Thailand, and whether your (health) insurance will intervene post-date?
It is also interesting to reflect on Kees' topic. And wish him well.
this link for see example comparison of names for same drug in Thailand
http://www.igenericdrugs.com/
I don't know how long you are going, but ask if you are allowed more because you are going away for a longer period of time and because you do not know whether the medicine is available there and at the pharmacy you have to ask for a medicine passport, I have one myself no problems with success
Yes, but only in oral form. (without prescription)
http://www.fk.cvz.nl/ The active ingredients, medicine and brand name are also described on this website. and “alternatives” keep in mind that other excipients in a medication can have a completely different effect. Good luck
Hi Chantal, here's the Belgian counterpart: http://www.bcfi.be
Would there be a Thai compendium online? That would satisfy Kees.
regards
I myself use Imigran nasal spray (20mg sumatriptan) against cluster headaches.
When we went to Thailand 4 years ago I brought quite a few with me, about 70 pieces for 10 weeks, but unfortunately not enough. The two pharmacists I inquired with at the time did not know it. My daughter then sent extra from the Netherlands. Fortunately, it arrived on time without any problems. A cluster headache sufferer without medication only wants to die.
Of course, this does not mean that it is not available elsewhere.
Play it safe while you can.
Thank you all for your responses
Dear Frans, that nasal spray does not work for me. The injection is really the end.
When I feel the attack coming on like a shot and I don't suffer from anything.
The annoying thing is that you are only allowed 3 per day. sometimes i have 7 attacks. then I use
pure oxygen. I can get that in Thailand but it doesn't work very well
Then I sit on the oxygen bottle for an hour and the pain is reduced to the feeling you have when you have a tooth pulled without anesthesia. But then I'll get through the attack
I still have plenty of time to find out
Greetings Kees
As an aside;
Difficult Kees that you can use 3 a day from your neurologist I assume.
My neurologist allows me to use the nasal spray throughout the day (with a 2-hour break in between).
My record is 7 pieces. But every neurologist seems to think differently about this.
In Chiang Mai, only Imigran 50 mg and 100 mg tablets are available and not everywhere.
They are very expensive 4 euros each. So better to take sumatriptan tablets with you.
Haven't found the injections here yet. They may be available in hospitals, haven't inquired yet.
Always get enough prescriptions from my doctor in Belgium to take enough medication with you.
It's not the Neurologist who makes a fuss about that. The package leaflet states that you can take 2 per 24 hours
I used 7 once since then my doctor is a bit annoying. About dose he see
I have already built up a stock. Then out of the pipe. Everything is better than not having any medication during an attack. Of course I still have that oxygen and I can use it unlimited
What I don't understand is that with you and many with you that nasal spray does work.
Next time I'll try again.
Dear Truus, the tablets do not work for me either. I don't dare to experiment for fear that I will have to endure a hellish attack, I can't do that anymore. My wife's sister works at the Naval Hospital in Satahip
We'll ask her.
Thank you
Dear Kees.
Your condition is no laughing matter.
It is indeed strange that the nasal spray does not work, the substance is absorbed by the lungs into the bloodstream. Your skin does the same with the injections. And therefore does not pass through the gastrointestinal tract like the compresses, where the effect can interfere with the metabolism.
If only the subcutaneous injections work, the only option is to bring them with you from the Netherlands.
Or have them shipped. if they come from home, it will also peel a lot in the purchase price, since your health insurance intervenes.
Your sister-in-law works at the hospital. Then your question could be answered clearly and clearly that way. The bloggers have done their best here.
Dear Davis
Certainly the Blogers have done their best and I thank them for that.
I will definitely try that spray again. I often read that the spray does not work for some people. You understand that I am terrified that I will soon be with a medicine that does not work. So I cling desperately to those injections.
I have enough in Thailand to get through a period.
Only you are stuck with the shelf life which is 1 year. Then the effect seems to decrease
The bad thing is that I never know when the period of attacks will begin.
They often stay away for a year and without warning they come back then I suffer from them for an average of 2 months.
It would have been nice if a blogger had said yes, Kees, you can just get it here. I'm going to ask my sister-in-law if she doesn't know I'll do whatever Lex does
I'll figure it out.
What I always do; I send an e-mail to Bangkok Hospital Phuket whether they have my medicines, brand name or active substance, I always receive an e-mail back, whether or not and since I am a "regular" patient there, I only have to send an e-mail when I'm back in Thailand and for how long and they make sure they have my medicines in stock, so I never have to deal with medicine passports and legalizations and import / export restrictions and the like, perfectly arranged and a perfect service, not free of course but responsible for the insurance.
Yours faithfully,
Lex K.
Hello Kees,
I have forwarded the question to the Thai Visa health forum, and the answers I have received indicate that this medicine, here in Thailand, is only available in tablet form. So it might be best to bring enough or have it shipped.
Hopefully my response can help you.
Greetings and the best with your health.
Didit
Dear Didie
Thanks for the effort. I'm going to find out what's best for me to do
Greetings Kees
Well then I'm luckier. I just have the attacks almost daily all year round, so I don't have to doubt.
It's starting to look a bit like a medical blog here, but I think it's too important (my own experience and I don't know how to approach someone personally).
Hopefully the moderator will let it pass again!
Officially, according to the leaflet, I can only use 2 x a day. However, according to my neurologist, this only applies to migraine patients and not to cluster headache patients. Needless to say, he told me that the active substances do not accumulate in the body when used more often per day. The breakdown and removal takes place within approx. 2 hours. Maybe my story with your neurologist will help you.
best French
I certainly have something to do with that. I am happy with your explanation
I don't think an exchange of an experience falls under chatting
Strange that one doctor knows and the other does not. I think that's a bad thing
I'll tell him what you tell here.
Then I have one more question for you. Does the nasal spray work as well as an injection?
When I feel the attack coming on I immediately take an injection and it doesn't bother me at all
a little bloated feeling in my head that's all.
I hope that is the case for you too
If you have that every day that's not nothing
Dear Kees,
I have no experience with the injections, simply because the nasal spray works pretty well for me and it is easier to administer.
I have never used oxygen. I do use 2 x 120mg verapamil daily.
Fortunately, the majority of my attacks are quite mild these days, but I have also had very tough years. Once in a while there is still a heavy blow in between. Then I just love it. And after every attack I say again: “So, one less to go in my life”.
I'll come back with a delayed response. Was in Pattaya International Hospital yesterday and just inquired at the pharmacist, then also had a chat in the pharmacy, where I always go.
In both cases, it was confirmed that the drug for injection is not available in Thailand.
There is still the possibility to find out more and that is to send an email to the manufacturer. I have not been able to find who the manufacturer is, but it can be found on the packaging of the tablets.
Because I didn't know exactly what cluster headaches are, I asked Wikipedia for some information. What a misery! You wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy.
I wish you all the best and hope you find the right way to fully enjoy Thailand.
