Home » Reader question » Reader question: Whether or not to book a flight ticket with THAI Airways?
Dear readers,
We have been flying with THAI Airways from Brussels to Bangkok for years. Now we want to book plane tickets for 2021. I read that some say that THAI Air is (almost) bankrupt. Others say they will start flying again in August.
What is Wisdom? Wait or choose another airline?
Regards,
Ron
Whether it concerns Thai airways or any other airline. I don't think it's wise to book a flight to Thailand at the moment.
VW Thai Airways. They are bankrupt and will start again soon. The bankruptcy is a trick to get rid of most debts. At the expense of many others I suppose.
I think that the suspension of payments they are in now is not a trick but a dire necessity otherwise the creditors will demand bankruptcy. The Thai state is not helping, the corona crisis has been going on for months and while many other airlines worldwide are supported by loans or other emergency aid, Thai Airways is strange. Strange because the Thai government has not yet promised a single baht of support and that can indicate 2 things, namely the existence of Thai Airways has come to an end and secondly, the Thai government has money problems, for example also the scheme of 5000 baht income support for corona - those affected whose numbers of beneficiaries have been changed several times; the government probably has a financing problem because of too much expenditure and greatly reduced income due to the crisis. .So don't expect government help for Thai Airways. Personally, I think the government is waiting for a takeover candidate to take over Thai in a very shrunken form, and then I think only 1/3 to half of the airline will remain. In the last scenario, think of Austria or Swiss, which have also been taken over by others in the past. My advice: book with an airline that is supported by a state such as Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, but given all the uncertainties, it is better not to book a ticket far in the future, because why already book now. In the past it was interesting to book early for cheaper tickets, but now you saddle yourself with uncertainty whether there will be flights or whether a company will still exist in a year or whether there are travel restrictions.
I normally fly with Thai Airways, my next flight is scheduled for 21/8/2020, but I assume that regardless of Thai Airways' problems, it will not go through due to COVID-19. I have also already booked a flight for the end of December, but this time with Lufthansa. So I'm not taking any chances.
There is a chance that Thai Airways will be declared bankrupt after the court hearing on 17/8/2020 or will remain grounded pending possible additional proceedings.
Ron,
If you follow the messages about Thai Airways, you can make a wise choice for yourself, I think.
They are in bad papers, I do not speak about whether or not they can go bankrupt, then you are not going to book a ticket with that company.
Goodbye,
The Thai office in Brussels is closed.
I also have a ticket open to fly to Bkk with Thai, was first on 25/5, after canceling to 12/6 and then moved to 12/7, but this one was also cancelled. !!
I am also not willing to fly to Bkk as long as a quarantine of 2 weeks is mandatory.
Inform yourself well before flying.
Imagine, a small month of vacation and two weeks mandatory in a hotel that is mandated by the government.
Nice prospect. !!!
I booked an EVA flight via the internet at D-Reizen in Breda for the end of October and an additional insurance for € 9 in case the company goes bankrupt.
The demise of TG would of course be a huge loss of face for the Thai people.
So that's really not going to happen.
Dick,
Losing face for the Thai people ??
I think this is the least of their worries, it is a loss of face for the Thai government and the upper echelons of Bangkok.
Marc
Well, not for the Thai people. An average Thai does not need Thai Airways. Money to eat and drink or to live.
It is expected that by the end of this year there will be 15 million people without work and income.
In Thailand, the government is afraid to release everything again. The shielding or lockdown, entry bans, freedom of action, curfew etc will remain until ???
Not on the basis of health, but on the basis of safety.
The current rulers are paralyzed with fear that their time has passed.
Whichever airline you book with, your donation will be met with applause. Every airline is short on cash and people who already book for 2021 are more than welcome. I think your financial advisor has the opposite opinion.
2021? Do you already know what restrictions apply? Is there air traffic from Europe to Thailand? Is Thailand open to foreigners again? Does Thai Airways still exist? And is there still flying from Brussels? Isn't there just a lockdown, in Belgium or Thailand?
Pre-corona it was easy to plan far ahead – the assumption that everything would go according to plan usually turned out to be correct. But that no longer applies. The shifting of data, restrictions and measures, and the constant changing of these, teach that looking a month ahead is already risky, let alone to 2021. Keep your money in the bank, and see how and what by the time the desired departure is at the door. The ticket may be slightly more expensive, but the chance that you lose all your money may also be smaller. Patience!
Hello everyone,
Reading all this makes me very suspicious.
I normally had a flight to Thailand in April 2020. By Mr. Due to Covid this was rebooked by Thai Airways
rebooked for November 2020. We did nothing about this. It was a promotional trip, so very cheap trip. According to Thai Airways, there is nothing wrong and this trip will certainly continue. What if the airline is declared bankrupt after 17/08? What happens to our ticket? We definitely want to go to Thailand for at least 3 months; My youngest son is getting married in Thailand on 27/12/2020 and we definitely want to be present. Quid?
Dear Walter, first of all congratulations on the marriage of your son!
Regarding thai airways ticket/trip, you will have to wait and see what happens in the coming months (unpredictable)… also has 4 tickets TG (April canceled and now last message validity extended to the end of 2021; Thai smile domestic flights even has the first communicated extended validity itself canceled now and informed that the tickets will be refunded after 45 working days???)) …
You are not sure yet about a trip to Thailand for 3 months (tourist visa??) Tourists would only be admitted in the last quarter of 2020 with all conditions yet to be determined (quarantine 14d, medical certificate/insurance, can you travel around Thailand or do you have to stay in your “destination bubble” country of origin admission??, etc etc)… I would Please be patient to learn about the new travel rules, because a trip to Thailand in 2020 is not yet certain! (and certainly not as a Belgian). The first countries that would be allowed for tourists are China, Japan and Korea… it is not yet known when the rest will follow!
I myself (retirement visa) am now in Thailand but I am not taking any risks... I am waiting until I have certainty for a RETURN flight Thai-Belgium-Thai. And I don't think this will be possible in 2020 if Covid continues to exist in Europe as it does now!
Tip: you can read the news (thai airways and thailands travel regulations) on the websites of “bangkok post” or “thaiger” … consult it every week and you are updated and wait patiently for the rest!
Good luck with your son's marriage!
Hi, we just booked flight tickets for 31-12-2020 with Thai airways and that will continue as usual.
Gert Jan writes “Strange because the Thai government has not yet pledged a single baht in support”
Yes, after 9 years of government support of billions, they are now also starting to realize that that is not the medicine for aid. A total reorganization is now the only option and then you have to declare the business bankrupt to get that done.
Unlike other airlines who are now being given a helping hand in this very difficult time, but not every year.
Most tickets currently being sold are flexible tickets. So I don't see it as a big problem to buy such a ticket if you have enough confidence in the survival chances of the airline in question. Very competitive prices at the moment. It just depends on how much risk you dare to take. No one can predict how prices will develop in the future.
I don't think they will go out of business
The Thai state does not want to lose its majority shares because otherwise they will be thrown out of the board immediately and they will certainly NOT let that happen
Losing all those overpaid board members no way
fly up and down ned-Thailand for years.
Despite the prices, I choose KLM.
You can say whatever you want.
But the service is just top notch.
Tickets cancelled... no problem, call or social media and they'll sort it out.
Yes .. you pay a little more but I choose security.
They also have to because of European regulations.
Or say lufthansa.
European.
Have flown cheap with asia airlines several times.
But when it comes down to it, they let you down.
Totally agree, cheap is expensive. Rather pay a little more with KLM or Lufthansa Emirates
Then everything is guaranteed. Those who now book with Thai Airways are asking for problems. Last but not least I have been coming to Thailand for a long time and miss it too, but there are so many beautiful places in the world. So patience is a virtue. Hopefully next year again. If KLM also cancels all flights until September, more will follow.
emirates.. no.
Have let me down several times.
Very bad experience with it.
Was going to ned in March.
Flight was cancelled.. unreachable further.
I can whistle for my money.
Look in your email, I have received several emails myself and each time I was informed of changes up to the last cancellations. If you want a voucher, valid for 2 years, you can request it or you can request a refund via a form. You can go to their website and then fill out the form and you will get a confirmation after sending, will take a while to get your money back but that's the case everywhere. If there is a later flight again and they have canceled your previous flight, a phone call will suffice and you will be booked on the future flight at no extra cost. The latter is also on their website. Nothing wrong with Emirates.
Fly from Frankfurt with Lufthansa to or from Bangkok, flying up to 5 times a week and not expensive.
I had to leave today 28/06 and come back 16/08 my cancellation has already been accepted but will get more clarity on 20/07 until September there will be no international flights, now let's hope some money comes back
Hi, I understand your dilemma!
Booking KLM, you are always in the right place.
I always fly with KLM , a lot cheaper than Thai Airways .
With Qatar Airways with a stopover in Doha? Currently less than 500 € return.
Why book now for 2021? Wait and see first, these are uncertain times.
