Hallo,

Thanks to the editors for your blog, just a question:

I have a Thai driver's license that expires at the end of May. do I necessarily have to extend it on the due date or can it also be extended a week or more earlier, for example?

With greeting,

Sake

My wife was a few weeks overdue with her rybewys. she had to go north from Chiang to some kind of provincial office.
in addition to the fixed fee, she paid 300 baht, an earlier extension is probably also possible.

You can renew it earlier, but keep both driving licenses with you until the old one has expired. Then you don't have to carry the old one with you anymore. You need your yellow booklet, your passport with valid stamps, a health certificate with eye test from a doctor and the necessary copies. (can be done on the spot) Motorcycle and driver's license separately. You can fill in an application form at the office. Perhaps neither a reaction test, but that is not much. Photos are taken there. After handing in and checking the forms, you will be given a number and you will have to wait your turn. Costs for 2 driving licenses approx. 1000 baht.
At the information desk there are two ladies who will help you through the entire process if you show your friendly smile. Good luck

If you need to renew your Thai driver's license, you can do so before the expiry date. If you do it after the expiration date, you basically drive without a driver's license, so in advance. No problem, your new driving license takes effect on the expiry date of your old driving licence.
If you live in Chiang Mai, keep in mind that immigration no longer provides proof of residence, so you must apply for it at the Dutch embassy or consulate, which is unfortunately closed in Chiang Mai.

Recently renewed my driver's license, was a month late, but no problem.
Doctor's certificate here in korat right in front of the office in 10 min and for the price of 80 bath.
I don't have a yellow booklet, so proof of residence at immigration and then to the driving license center. Just brake, recognize colors and eye test? And that's it, don't worry for five years.

As with most documents (visa, driver's license, etc.) it can be extended from 1 month before the expiration date.

Just bring your passport (containing your 1-year visa). Is sufficient. In addition, of course, your old driver's license and a doctor's statement.

Your driver's license expires on your birthday. You can replace your driver's license before the expiry date, but it is also possible to go 1 or 2 days after the expiry date. Your driving license will then be extended until your first birthday following 5 years of validity. So your driver's license is then valid for 6 years instead of 5. Or actually 6 years minus 1 day.
The disadvantage is that you drive for 1 or 2 days without a valid driver's license.

No problem ! You could apply for an international driver's license in Belgium and take this with you when renewing your Thai driver's license.

I did not need a health certificate when renewing my driver's license, but proof of residence issued by the embassy or immigration service is required. .
