Reader question: Thai SIM card that I can also use in Belgium?
Dear readers,
I would like to know which SIM card for my mobile phone I should buy in Thailand in order to use it later in Belgium? I notice that I can no longer use my Thai SIM card from 12call once I'm in Belgium.
Is there such a thing as an international SIM card? When I make a bank transaction, they send a pin code to my Thai number and I can't get hold of this.
Regards,
Dirk (BE)
When I am in Belgium and want to carry out a Thai banking transaction, I receive my OTP code via my True SIM card. Without any problem. You have to activate them of course.
Years ago I also had that problem and when I returned I visited a True store in Bangkok. There presented the problem and asked if my Sim card could also be activated for abroad. Wasn't a problem. Did a counter clerk from True. She made some adjustments, which I don't know. From then on my True Sim card worked without any problems in Belgium.
It is, by the way, an ordinary charging card. I don't have a subscription so it certainly doesn't make a difference.
Only use it in Belgium to receive that OTP code, otherwise it will be expensive. In Belgium I also still have my Proximus SIM card that is active and I charge when I go there. The amount remains active for one year.
Handy for that is a GSM device with dual SIM card. (I have an OPPO 5 device with that option) You only have to activate the SIM card in question and you don't have to physically change SIM every time.
Hopefully this information is of some use to you.
I may live in Laos, but that makes a difference to the answer.
I have a Dutch prepaid number and roaming via dtac with roaming again to unitel In Laos. My Dutch bank sends the code to my Dutch number by SMS. I receive it here.
For Thailand you could then take a Belgian prepaid number and have the code entered on it. With this number you turn on roaming and in Thailand you could receive the code on your Belgian number.
Have your own SIM card from True with the cheapest plan.
Have it released for world coverage through a true office.
and that works perfectly both in NL and last months in the USA
Greetings Pete
My 12call (AIS) SIM card works perfectly in the Netherlands.
Please contact the AIS service number/email.
have a prepaid ais sim. In the Netherlands I simply receive the so-called "otp" code without any problems. Always have a call credit. Simply because when I enter Thailand I don't want to charge head over heels.
I myself have been using a SIM card from dtac for years. For that I have a subscription that costs me 59 baht + VAT monthly. In recent years I only stay in Thailand for a few months a year, so I make an advance payment of 1.000 baht so that I can rest easy for a long time. Text messages arrive everywhere, including in Belgium. Receiving OTPs from the Thai banks where I have accounts are possible.
My 12call card also stopped working the last time I was in the Netherlands. I had just converted my prepaid card into a subscription. Back in Thailand I saw in the settings that you have to turn on international call and/or roaming service. Located in settings in MyAIS.
Best to just buy a prepay (15 euros at Mobile Vikings) possibly while keeping your number in Belgium. Simply change your SIM card as soon as you are on the plane.
You can always turn on roaming on a sim card abroad, but that is very expensive to Thailand or vice versa to Belgium.
You can still do your banking transactions with your bank card. Or have your code sent to you by email (depending on which bank you are with)
My 12C (AIS) card works fine for me in the Netherlands, so probably in Belgium too. Just through https://myais.ais.co.th/ create an account and then via https://myais.ais.co.th/services/international activate the 'International Roaming Service'.
http://www.ais.co.th/roaming/en/faq.html
If it is an AIS sim card enter code *125*1# = Turn on International Roaming.
then you will see on screen briefly “OSD running ” and a little later confirmation ” registered ”
Do it in Thailand
No problem for me to use SIM card in Belgium. Just load money and have worldwide coverage.
Do this via recharge.com and get confirmation directly from AIS.
I have a Thai sim from ais and it is called the one sim and it has been working in the Netherlands since February 14, but now that my package has run out, which is normal, I can no longer upgrade it, so I think it may still work until den, but I can no more internet or calling.
maybe an idea to have your message forwarded after Europe
in the Netherlands I press asterisk 21 asterisk then thai number and then hash. i get all tel and messages in thailand on the phone .
maybe this also goes from Thailand but then the other way around.
I've had the same 15call number for 12 years and it works fine in Europe. I only use this when I have to bank and an otp is requested. Every 2 months I add some money
How can I charge every 2 months from Belgium?
I do that through my Thai account (Kasikorn). Since you need the text messages for your banking, you will also have that option.
Thanks in advance for all the responses, my Thai number is no longer rechargeable (expired?) in Belgium. I have not been able to reload this number for 15 months now and that must be the reason. Of course a pity because this number is linked is to my bank account no.
Could I still fix this?
Dear dvw (Dirk?),
I'm afraid your Thai phone number has indeed been released again.
I also had this going on (dtac) and then I could no longer do internet banking from my Thai bank account (Krungthai). Apps whose accounts were linked to that number also stopped functioning. To link another phone number to the bank account, I had to go to a branch of the bank in Thailand.
Nowadays the Krungthai banking app no longer asks for an OTP code via SMS and I can also top up my phone credit from NL.
