Dear readers,

A Thai friend of mine, his Dutch partner passed away in Thailand. His partner had lived in Thailand for more than 10 years. What should we do? Inform Embassy? Do we get a death certificate through the embassy?

Do I have to contact the National Office for Identity Data (RvIG)?

Regards,

Louis

Louis, thank you for taking care of these formal things.

    1. Is there a will? Look that up. Get all the papers out, especially to see if the Thai partner is entitled to assets and pension.
    2. Notify the embassy, but do not hand in your passport until everything has been settled.
    3. Message his family if you have that info.
    4. Ask the doctor who treated him or pronounced him dead for a death certificate in TH and ENG.
    5. Whose name are his bank accounts in? That cannot just be done on the Thai partner, even if there is a will. Consult a thanaai (lawyer, notary)
6., Message benefit agencies such as SVB, ABP, Pensions; you need the death certificate for that.

You have a lot of work coming your way. Good luck.

The Dutch Association in Pattaya has a scenario available for a death,

TIP: a Thai death certificate can also be converted into a Dutch certificate free of charge.

This can be useful if Dutch authorities want such a deed.
In such cases it is easy to obtain an extract. Without translation and legalization hassle again.

If the Dutch embassy receives a notification of death, the embassy wants a copy of the passport of the deceased and an official confirmation of death from the Thai authorities: autopsy document. The passport is invalidated.
The Dutch embassy informs next of kin about further handling or transport.
Transport of the deceased may be arranged by yourself or outsourced.

For the release of the deceased, the Thai authority requires a so-called authorization certificate from the Dutch embassy.

With the authorization letter, the original death certificate can be requested from the town hall.
It is useful to have several copies of the passport and the citizen service number.

All organizations will be notified of the death by registered letter.
Benefit agencies, banks, insurance companies, etc.
An autopsy document is important for the will.
