Reader question: Missing friendship in Bangkok
Dear fellow Dutch Thialanders,
Here is my question regarding: missing a friendship in Bangkok. I understand that this blog is not a dating site, however I am definitely not out on a date 🙂
I have been living in Thailand for 4 years now. First 3 years in Sawang Arom Uthai Thani district, and now almost 1 year in Bangkok, Chatuchak 10900. What I miss here in Bangkok is a friendship.
Yes, yes I know, there are business clubs or Dutch meeting evenings, but I have little appetite for those. I have been a member of entrepreneurial clubs etc etc for almost my entire business life. I no longer need that. Am happy and back to basics with a full backpack of experiences.
My concrete question here on this blog: Are there fellow gray and wise Dutch Thais here in Bangkok in the Chatuchak region or nearby who also miss having a friendship?
If yes, and there is interest in an introductory sit with Coffee, I look forward to it.
Cheers.
John
Bye John!
Well, I miss the same thing when I stay with my Thai wife in Bangkok (Bang Khun Thian) for a longer period of time every year. Then I sometimes want to have some contact with others and, on the other hand, I don't feel the need to join a club or association.
However, at the moment I am “stuck” in NL and it doesn't look like I'll be back in BKK soon, but maybe for the future it's nice to keep in touch. My email: [email protected]
Maybe see you later!
Regards, Haki
Dear Haki,
thx for your message. Honestly, it's really nice to get a positive response.
I will definitely send an email tomorrow.
Cheers
John.
Dear John, I can totally imagine that you would like to have a nice time together in your own language every now and then. But I wouldn't limit the search for friends to men with gray hair. Perhaps there are nice active readers with a bald head, or who are a lot younger. 🙂 I'm only in my 30s myself, but I have several acquaintances and friends who are already worked out (yes, I sometimes teasingly call them elderly 555). Tino and I regularly visit each other here in the Netherlands. I don't live in Bangkok so a cup of coffee is out of the question. I wish you luck in your search for casual contacts (outside clubs and such).
If the number of responses is disappointing, see if you can join an event organized by the embassy or Dutch/Flemish club as a non-member. If you meet an interesting person there, a friendship can arise without being chained to meet each other at a club with members (membership obligations and stuff that you don't want).
Dear Rob,
yeah you are absolutely right about looking into the gray age, however i just wanted to let you know that i passed 35 🙂
I am just as good with younger people as I am with older ones.
Of course I have had several conversations with Dutch people here in Bangkok, including at the Dutch Embassy.
I also address ,,Farangs” in the large shopping malls, actually both seek contact with their eyes and the familiar do you want to talk to me smile, but that does not lead to more than a short superficial conversation. Usually in English. I can also say that most Dutch people are distant.
As for the meeting evenings / clubs,…. is no longer something I really warm to.
Anyway, thanks for your message,
If you are in BKK, please send an email to: [email protected]
Cheers
John.
Strange, someone who wants to meet people but not go to a meeting evening. You're making it pretty hard on yourself. The evenings are here and they are quite fun.
Dear Dirk,
what is strange for one is not strange but understandable for the other 🙂
There are certainly such evenings, I sincerely hope that you enjoy yourself.
No, dear Dick, that is not strange. You already say “evenings”, and then often far away from where I live in BKK. And then also have to get up early the next morning, because my wife has to go to work at 0530 am. For example, the last 2 years I was allowed to participate in decorating etc. for the Sinterklaas party of the association because it was during the day and on a Thai holiday, so that my wife could also join. So if possible, we will contact you. But it's still hard!
Hi John,
i'm having the same , been living in bangkok for 9 years near ladpharoroad 101,
my email . [email protected]
Greetings Ger
Hello Ger,
great of you to respond.
Send an email to you tomorrow.
Cheers
John.
