Home » Reader question » Reader question: Can I only use Transferwise with a European residential address?
Dear readers,
I hear friends recommend Transferwise to transfer money from, in my case Belgium to Thailand, but one of these friends claims that you have to have a European address and that I, who live in Thailand, cannot use this company.
Is this true?
Regards,
Michel
Hi Michel,
I live permanently in Thailand but still have a Dutch bank account. When transferring via Transferwise, I then pay via my Dutch bank without any problem. So don't know if you still have a Belgian bank account that you can use.
I had the same issue but “just” entered the address of one of my children and was then able to easily create an account with TW. You can also enter the address of your bank, which also works fine.
We use TransferWise from Thailand without any problems.
If you want to work both from Belgium/the Netherlands and from Thailand, you will need a telephone number in the respective countries to receive your code.
Never had a problem with that.
Greetings
Guy
Nonsense, you only need to have a Belgian / Dutch bank account that they can debit (whether or not via Ideal) or credit card ... .. Arranged within 24 hours ...
No, that's not right… I live in Thailand AND Transferwise knows my address here and I can use their services… and have done so several times…
Like mo... I still have an ING account in NL...
Dear Michel,
what your friend says is not true. I have been living permanently in Thailand for years, have deregistered in Belgium and have been using Transferwise without any problem for years. I still have a Belgian bank account into which, among other things, my pension is paid monthly. You also do not need a Belgian address to maintain a Belgian bank account. Things are different when it comes to opening a Belgian account, but most Belgians do have a Belgian bank account.
I think the friend means a Belgian bank account.
I am Belgian, deregistered in Belgium and since December 11, 2007 I live with my family in Thailand. My retirement benefits are monthly
transferred to our joint, because of being married, ING bank account in Belgium.
I have been making monthly transfers from this account to TransferWise via domestic payment for a year now.
The same day the money is in my Thai account. It can't be faster.
Conclusion: you do not have to keep an address in Belgium
If you have a bank in Belgium you can transfer without any problems with TransferWise I even have a Belgian IBAN with TransferWise where you can set up money and then easily transfer
Transferwise is not that difficult with addresses and it is a pity that Azimo is. The latter has good (customer) service, but with large amounts of just under 10.000 euros, they put the brakes on.
In the end I had to provide a NL address, but since no proof could be provided, they continued to refuse to transfer the money already collected. Then cancel the transfer and refund the money after a few days.
Transferwise slow and slightly more expensive than Azimo but asking less.
