Dear readers,

Hello, my name is Steven, I am 18 years old and hope to go to Thailand in June. As I am half Thai, I have a lot of family there and so I visit often. But in this summer is the first time I travel without my parents.

I want to visit Chiang Rai for the first time.

Now I know my way around Thailand quite well, but I would like to know if there is a bus connection between Chiang Rai and Surin (Isaan). I saw on the internet that Nakhonchai Air departs from Chiang Rai to Surin once a day, but would anyone know what time that bus leaves? That is nowhere to be found, not even on the obscure site of Nakhonchai Air.

I would be very pleased if someone could help me with this.

Greetings,

Steven

There are a lot of direct (Night) bus lines in TH between places in the north and Isan, usually only once a day (night actually). Whether this one belongs, may be, but don't think so. So there is a dead simple solution, also because it will be a very long drive on 1-lane roads: transfer somewhere. When you arrive in CRai on the New, large BoKoSo, outside the city, see which bus links there are, I estimate at least Kohrat (the Pattaya bus) or Khon Khaen and ask (I'm sure you can read + speak Thai?) what time arriving approx. That will be around 2/6 in the next morning. Then you first eat, inquire when the next bus leaves and buy a phee (= ticket).
It is probably much more often and possibly even faster by going via BKK/MOchitmai anyway, because of the enormous number of buses and the fact that they hardly make any intermediate stops (because there are other lines for that). Especially if the other bus is already fully booked, you can always go with this one.
There is a ditto bus from ChMAI to Ubon, but I don't know the exact route, so I don't think via Surin. Moreover: this of course always means the city (amphoe muang) Surin, you will really want to go somewhere else.
There is even a nationally numbered bus line system for everything BoKoSo in TH, with direct lines Noord-Isan being renumbered in the 5xx series. But I have never been able to find a complete overview of all lines. FROM BKK it is eg 1-110, and 901-998, 111 up is within NORD, 2xx is within Isan etc. From 1001 local is within 1 chiangwat, but through 2 amphoes and so on. Those numbers are always life-size on the side of the bus, with the class to which they belong.
On a site like rome2rio, 12goasia or busbud you can check whether they offer anything, but they are not very reliable for TH.

I know that there is indeed a bus from Chiang Mai to Ubon, which also stops in Surin. Perhaps traveling to Chiang Mai for the first time is less quick than a direct bus journey from Chiang Rai. Asking around in Thai is indeed no problem
      Thanks for the information!

NCair is a great company, belongs to the 3 best in all of TH. I suspect there is a switch somewhere if it is so unclear. Butre: a real Thai will not worry about this kind of thing at all - the departure is sometime in the afternoon/early evening. Booking online months in advance is also total nonsense, then you only show that you still have to acclimatize. Keep in mind that it is a jerk of at least 18-20 hours.

Fine thanks. I'm not going to book, I was just curious when that bus would leave. I'm aware it's going to be a long ride!

Nakhonchai Air has the bus connection you're looking for. Nakhonchai is one of the better airlines and my wife always takes it to Bangkok.

I have a link but don't know how old it is. There is a website to call.

True Nakchonchai air also has its own site and from Chiang Ria or Chiang Mail drive via the central stop in Uttaradit.
Nakonchia Air has VIP buses with 3 seats next to each other. A ride from Bangkok (Mochit) to Uttaradit (575 km) costs 800 baht per person.
Because we also have a condo in Jomtien, we sometimes take the bus Uttaradit Jomtien vv (900 bath. Always take the night buses.

Excellent service food and drink on board and (1 bread meal, snack and drink free).

On the site you can choose English and immediately see times and prices.
Sign up as a member and pay with Visa. Advice pay attention when you travel and if you plan to do this around Thai holidays, do so at least 2 weeks in advance

You can pay in advance and even see how people drive if you recall thailand maps. Jomtien. Uttaradit.
Stops e.g. Bangkok, Rangsit (DMK), Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit. Or if someone wants to get out on the way. DO NOT stop at other places to pick people up.

Maybe not directly, but definitely via (bus/traffic hub) Nakhon Ratchasima (abbreviated Korat); buy a ticket to Surin at one of the many counters there. There are countless people who can tell you which ticket office you should go to.

Ok thanks for your comment, I'm going to remember Nakhon Ratchasima!

I used to live in Chiang Mai and traveled several times from Chiang Mai to Surin by VIP bus. Possible you can go from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai and on to Surin.
