Reader question: Home visit of immigration officials
Dear readers,
I have a reader question regarding the home visits of immigration officers. Who has experience with the home visits that immigration officials come to do?
We have heard that they are from Bangkok not from their own region, is this correct? My wife is not happy when strangers come sniffing around the house. Do they make an appointment by phone or do they just walk in one day?
What is the idea behind this home visit? Who has experience with positive negative?
Regards,
Steven

you don't have to let them in, they just come to see if you live there
if they want to get in, she needs a search warrant
take a picture of them for proof
These are normally immigration officers from your local immigration office, i.e. the office where you applied for an extension. But that is not always necessary. Such visits can also be carried out by colleagues from the police or another immigration office if you live too far or it is too busy.
But it is not the case that they come from Bangkok especially for this to visit you.
In Kanchanaburi I usually get a phone call the day of my application, or the day after, asking if they can drop by. Usually the day after that.
Sometimes it's 1 IO alone, sometimes with 2 or 3, depends on what they have to do before or after the visit to you.
Really don't come sniffing around the house. I don't have that experience. Always a conversation with your wife and / or someone you know. Then they take some pictures with you and your wife.
My experience is that this always takes place in a friendly atmosphere and usually takes about 15 minutes
In short, it actually comes down to the fact that they want to know that you do not cause a nuisance where you live and that you do live there with your wife, in other words that your relationship is “de jure et de facto” as provided for in the regulations
Experiences are always positive.
Ronnie,
Since I haven't experienced that in Chiangmai in all those 12 years, I wondered if they visit you (and others) every year because of marriage visa. In other words, to establish that the applicant and his wife actually reside together at the specified address.
I myself have an annual visa for a single person.
Usually is common with “Thai Marriage”. Hence the “under consideration” stamp.
With “Retired” it is less common but it is possible.
So it's pretty normal that they don't do that with you.
After my ASQ hotel in Bangkok I arrived in Ubon Ratchathani on January 21.
Immediately, the next day, an employee of the regional hospital came to check my presence. Also a chat about Covid19, my temperature was measured, a few pictures were taken and the lady left again.
I felt very welcome in Ubon Ratchathani !!
I completely agree with Ronny's words.
Do not come in, have a chat with the witness you summoned (copy ID and house book required) and take a few photos in front of the house.
we had a very good experience with their visit. Friendly conversation with my wife (one only spoke Thai). A neighbor had to be summoned to testify about me. And a picture was taken of my wife and me right in front of the gate, which showed the house number. I thought the cat should be in that picture too. No problem. After twenty minutes everything was ready and the officials left. There were no problems. My wife later said that those officials carry out this check because there were quite a few illegal foreign migrant workers in our neighborhood.
They came to me in Chiang Mai with 2 men, did not speak a word about the border. Correct and asked if they could come in. They took in everything in the living room and asked about my merchant navy officer's cap. When I explained that they were even kinder. They did, however, ask for a contribution in advance in a private chat with my wife.
According to others, if you do not comply with this, approval may be delayed, or further information must be provided. Long live Thailand.
Oh yes and as standard they ask 500 baht for petrol in their BMW from the boss . They would have to bear the cost of petrol themselves.
They get 0 bath from me.
Never had a question about any contribution. I find it strange that such a response took so long.
Moreover, immigration has their own cars with logo on the side and they do not drive the "boss's".
I think only for marriage based visa extension extension.
In all the 15 years that I have lived here at retirement, I have never seen an official of the IMMI at my home.
Not even from the local gendarmerie.
They can come coffee is ready, have nothing to hide.
Just sometimes wonder why they have to drive a very expensive BMW at the IMMI with that facial recognition camera on top of the roof.
See this car is also a Hybrid version, sometimes standing next to the building when I come for my 90 days report.
You can also build something like that on a Toyota Yaris or Mazda 3, it seems a lot cheaper to me.
Or do they have enough money at the Immi.
Have to laugh at the comment of the 500 bath for petrol if they can also drive partly on electric.
Jan Beute.
I have already had a year extension based on Retirement for 8 years. As we all already know in Thailand, regarding immigration customs, it is the same everywhere but different…. Here, in Chumphon, since 3 years you get an 'under consideration stamp' of 1 month on renewal. Is normally only customary for renewal based on marriage.
During those 8y I got 1 home visit from immigration, also 3y ago. They probably had nothing else to do, so they just stopped by here. Wasn't announced, no conversation with neighbours, no questions…. picture of the house and they were gone again.
So we see that there is no real straight line in the way of working of immi.
Must say: everything goes very smoothly here with immigration, no problem at all.
Ronny you are a winner with all your clear answers and advice. Keep it up
Good luck and warm regards.
