Dear readers,

What everyone forgets is that Schiphol is a hub for many passengers. For example, passengers from the US remain in transit area to later fly to Bangkok. Of course only after restrictions are lifted. The thinking that if you want to fly from the Netherlands you are on a plane with only Dutch people is not correct. For this reason I expect that it will be a while before tourists can come again.

If the Netherlands is virus-free, does that imply that only Dutch people are allowed on a flight? Is someone going to call discrimination again because they live in the Netherlands with a residence permit?

Regards,

Rob

Where do you get that 'everyone forgets that Schiphol is a hub for many passengers'?
Who is allowed to enter Thailand is only determined by Thailand and if it is certain for the airline that you will not be allowed, you will not board.

    Hi Cornelius,
my first response was a bit shorter and was published in full by the editors as a separate article. Maybe I was a bit unclear so I'll try to explain what I mean. If the Netherlands receives permission from Thailand to bring in passengers again, will that only apply to Dutch residents? That's what I meant by Schiphol is a hub for passengers flying through. What if they come from a country for which Thailand has not yet issued a permit? You say that they will not be accepted by the airline. What if someone from such a country lives in the Netherlands? Will it be accepted or not? Will that person enter Thailand? Hope it's more clear now what I meant to say.

Good question to ask the Thai embassy by then.

In my opinion, the Thai authorities are not yet ready to think about such cases.
So I am afraid that non-Dutch people from a country that has not been declared virus-free, who live in a virus-free Netherlands with a residence permit and want to start their journey to Thailand in the Netherlands, will not be allowed to enter Thailand.

If you want an answer now, you could also ask the question to the Thai embassy of New Zealand, which has now been declared virus-free. Eg. write that you are a Dutch citizen and live in New Zealand with a residence permit.

A small addition if I may. If passengers flying through remain in the transit area, there is no passport control. Can you imagine how “nice” it will be for the gate employee who has to check passports and then refuse passengers? I can already see flight delays looming, but maybe I'm too initiated into this matter or am I thinking of doom?

The Netherlands will probably not be virus-free until there is a vaccine.

Being completely virus-free has never been a short-term goal for the Netherlands. Containing the virus and ensuring that it remains manageable for healthcare is the primary goal and thus gaining time to develop medication and a vaccine.

With the opening of the European internal borders and the further relaxation of the measures, the virus will certainly remain in the Netherlands for a while.

Thailand has always gone for 100%. Nothing has been spared for this. Fortunately, we in the Netherlands are not prepared to go that far. Our freedom and prosperity are very important to the Dutch.

Hoping that the Netherlands will be on a list of countries that are virus-free in the coming months is probably a vain hope.
