Home » Reader question » Reader question: I am looking for good detailed road maps of Thailand
Dear readers,
During my stay I often make trips by car in Northern Thailand, specifically around Chiang Mai, and sometimes it seems like a puzzle ride, despite my Thai wife sitting next to me, who can read the directional signs.
The road maps I use only have a scale of 1:850.000 resp. 1:750.000 and I think that's way too coarse. I often use printouts from google maps, which are extremely detailed, but where the detail is also lacking for some sub-areas. In addition, I do not always have the opportunity to make printouts from Google Maps.
In short, I am recommended for giving detailed road maps and where I can get them in Thailand. I am also recommended for good hiking maps regarding Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai area, Doi Inthanon).
Thanks in advance for the tips.
Henk

success assured.
Thinknet and Pnmap are household names. Their websites are not in English but you have a Thai woman who can help. Unfortunately, the scale is not indicated on the websites.
The Thinknet map NO Thailand is on a scale of 550.000, I haven't found a better map here yet, or it must be a city map, but you're not looking for that. Thinknet indicates the roads with 4 numbers well, the 'white' roads with 5 numbers are only drawn and all maps are already out of date when they are finally in the store, so you are sometimes faced with surprises.
Chiang Mai has good bookshops, you might want to look there. Check out motorcycle club websites.
I bought the best cards in Suriwong Book Center in Chiang Mai. Beautiful maps of the entire North on a scale of 1:370.000 and partial maps (Samoeng) 1:70.000. The publisher is called PN Map http://www.pnmap.com. There I once bought topographical maps of Phayao on a scale of 1:50.000 (they are from 1987 and made by the military, I couldn't get a map of the border areas at the time). Small green and white cards. I also have a topographical map from the sixties of Chiang Kham and the surrounding area. There are a number of villages of hill tribes that have now disappeared from the face of the earth. The Thai state is still rough with the hill tribes and other forest dwellers.
As a questioner, thank you for the tip. I will be visiting Suriwong Book Center next week to purchase these more detailed “paper” road maps, which I was primarily looking for. Nevertheless, I also find the comments with the websites to be visited regarding tablets (Android) valuable.
Thank you for this!
Hank, Sarahphi
Just had a long trip. Isan. Simply with the iPad and the app with maps in combination with the GPS that is on it. Found everything. Well arranged. Even without a Thai woman who is supposed to read signs?
Besides the "paper" road maps, there are also various apps for a good route planner.
A very detailed app for both Apple and Android is Nostra map.
Download in the app store and user-friendly and free.
For more information you can also visit the website:

I have been using Garmin street maps for years, the SD card costs a thousand baht or together with your Garmin GPS about 4000 baht…
I use the SD card with the Thai software in my European Garmin, the Nuvi 200 class has a bit little memory to store long journeys but the Nuvi 750 has no problem with it.
I also sometimes use Roadway's road maps in Thai and English that are offered along the highways in the shops for 99 baht, it is a nice reference to see afterwards where you were in Thailand. These maps are 1cm equal to 12km.
Tomtom is also for sale in Thailand version but only for sale in Thailand.
There are 3 excellent maps available for the area around Chiang Mai, viz.
1. Golden Triangle loop, 1:360.000 so direction Chiang Rai Golden triangle
2. Mae Hong Son Loop, 1:375.000 id to Mae Hong Son area
3. Mae Sa Valley (the Samoeng Loop, 1:65.000
these cards are published by GT Rider (www.gtrider.com)
very detailed, with many points of interest indicated on the map
I have been using them for over 2 years now and they are great
Have ordered maps via the internet of the Mae Hong Son loop (1:375.000) and the Golden Triangle (1:360,000) via http://www.gt-rider.com/ , these are plastified and I think also available in bookstores in CM at 250 baht each
I use tomtom thailand and get everywhere. I also have Sygic but it is less accurate.
The advantage of Sygic is that later when you are at home you can open the kml files in google-earth and see where you have been.
If you don't want/can't navigate electronically…. there are Michelin maps of Thailand. They are quite detailed. If I remember correctly, I bought it in Airport Plaza at the Robinsons bookstore.
Hello, I have a Tom Tom live world. This one works perfectly. He just doesn't recognize all dirt roads. But from city to city or village works perfectly. Good luck.
Im thailand again next week.i use my nokia lumia 1520.free thai maps
Hi you can also buy many detailed maps at the Dungkamon book Center at the Th. Kotchasan (old center NE) in CM
Dear Henk,
Bought 4 years ago military topography maps in the DK Bookshop Chiangrai, scale 1:50, unfortunately no longer available. Perhaps even with the eponymous bookshop Chiangmai.
But can also be ordered in Bangkok. Tel 02-222-9196( 02-222-8844)
To be ordered per series of 4 pieces (+- 4x 120 ฿). Each map covers an area of 15 km, so each set 30 x 30 km, or 1 degree NBr/Zbr. The whole of Thailand will comprise roughly a 1000 cards!
They are numbered from I. II(t.south of 1), III(o.vvan II) and IV(O.v.I) Around the city of Chiangrai are the numbers
4948. To the north (Maechan are the numbers 5048, to the east 4949 etc.
The series 4948 is on OL. 99 gr 30 minutes.- 100 gr. 00 min. and NBr.19 gr 30 min – 20 gr. 00 minutes
So, make a big pot of coffee, take an overview map of Thailand with Chiangrai and Chiangmai on it, Draw the serial numbers 4948 using North latitude and East longitude. Mark the desired area of Changmai, calculate the numbers of Changmai and order the desired maps through your Thai wife.
If this does not work, see the options mentioned above.
Good luck Martin
Morning Martin,
Nice, such a series of military maps, but to be able to work with it is something else in my opinion.
Even if we had all the coffee beans from Thailand, we would really end up at the North Pole.
We have NUVI GPS.
We have only had that case updated here in TECOM, 3rd floor, turn clockwise from the escalator, walk to the back and 15 meters to the right is a small shop that does this.
We paid 500 baht.
Haha, and then also found out that that thing is already 7 years old.
Cards are and remain surprise packages.
