Home » Reader question » Reader question: Which island in Thailand do you recommend?
Dear readers,
We would like to go to South Thailand for 5 days in mid-December. Initially we went to Koh Phangan but apparently the weather is not so good there in December.
We are mainly looking for a:
- beachfront hotel-sunset (but not a must)
- island where it is quiet but not too quiet: we are not Robinson Crusoes. We would like to go to a market in the evening, to a beach bar (no wild discotheques) and eat in a different restaurant every day. Please close to the hotel so we don't have to take a taxi.
Which island seems most suitable?
Thanks!
Malfrats
Very short;
Ko Lanta => google
Ko Lipe => google
Allow a day's travel for Koh Lipe! But then you also have something.
Then I would do Koh Phangan, just not too close to Haad rin (Full moon party) but a bit closer to the pier. The weather is fine around that time (all year) and it is also just a very nice island
koh-tao
without a doubt Kho Lanta.
I think mid-December the weather is fine everywhere in Thailand.
There are so many beautiful islands, but if you still want enough activities, I would go for Koh Samui.
Certainly do not choose Chaweng or Lamai, but rather look in the vicinity of Bophut or Maenam.
I think these last two places are a mix of what you are looking for.
If you want to do everything on foot, Bophut is probably a bit easier than Maenam.
Agree, we live in Bophut ourselves, everything is close by. No overcrowded beaches, and even on a rainy day there are plenty of options on Samui. On the smaller islands you don't have much choice in that respect. Since it is high season, book on time. This also applies to any flight. Been living here for over six years now, but the rainy season is unpredictable here. However, it is always warm, so no cool period. Well, for years in December a bit chilly in the evening. The advantage here is also above a small island that there is an airport, so no time wasted with the ferries.
I read that various people again recommend islands that are not applicable (see opening question). The Gulf of Thailand has more precipitation in December than the southern Andaman coast.
I would say, indeed from Koh Lanta and further down!!
Lots of fun.
We visited Ko Samet, Ko Samui and many beaches on Phuket. All recommended. What we definitely want to return to is Ko Phi Phi, even if it is a commercial place upon arrival.
No idea about the climate in December.
In December, the rainy season is over throughout Thailand.
Go to the best : KRABI with its beautiful islands and beaches : DO !!!!
Absolutely Koh Lanta not a party island but plenty of bars and restaurants the busiest beach is Klong Dao beach but if you want you can all lie there
And when you are there you can come to my restaurant Black Coraln at Diamond Sand and if you
tired of Thai food, you can get a delicious herring or croquette with me
Have fun
Despite the mass tourism, I think phi phi is great. The large cliffs against the azure blue bays. Kayaking to a beach with monkeys, kayaking to another bay and having the beach private and snorkeling. Just pay attention to the location of your hotel so that you are not in the noise of the beach party…
koh phangan nothing wrong with it in our winter! no waves no rain as in our summer but what you are looking for can be found on koh lipe there are only 3 cars driving there. i went there from krabi with mini bus towards satun. transfer from pakbara to lipe
Thanks for the many responses everyone!
Because we read here and there that there can still be a lot of rain in December in Phangan, Samui or Tao (and this has also been confirmed to us by several contacted hotels in those locations), we will rather head towards Krabi/Koh Lanta.
Krabi seems quite expensive that period (especially the hotels on the beach and close to Ao Nang) so I see us moving towards Koh Lanta even earlier (and from there a few trips to Krabi / Phi Phi). Is Koh Lanta still “vibrant” enough for us?
Is Khao Lak also recommended?
PS We are from Khao Sok
Thanks everyone!
