Staying in Thailand for half a year?
Dear readers,
We plan to stay in Thailand for half a year from October to April in 2024/2025. We want to prepare ourselves well and that is why we will be going to Thailand for 2020 months in 2.
Our questions are:
- What is the best way to rent a house/apartment? (what are safe sites?). Can you also rent from private individuals and is that safe? All tips and addresses (not commercial but really based on personal experiences) are welcome!
- Can you also do it for 1 month? Because we prefer to see what we like best in 2 places (so January 2020 in… and February 2020 in….).
- I want to take my cat to Thailand. Does anyone know how I can do that best (preferably take him on the same flight as we go, but don't know which airline is the best)? And should he be quarantined?
There will probably be more questions during the year, but these are the most pressing questions for us right now…
Thanks in advance for your responses.
Greetings,
Ed & Monica
Seems a bit exaggerated to collect information for 2024 now. Especially for a country where everything changes so quickly. The only thing I can say now is that it is possible to rent accommodation for shorter periods almost everywhere. And that in many price ranges. So also for 1 or 2 months. It is also useful to open a bank account here. (if still possible by then)
Information regarding visas cannot be given at this time, as everything changes regularly.
The same goes for bringing pets.
So you have to be patient for a while. You can of course already read many experiences of expats on the internet. You can also find a lot of information on this blog. This is of course also good preparation in itself.
Totally agree Nicky.
Gathering information for 2024 now will no longer be representative by then, especially for Thailand.
The country, infrastructure and regulations are changing very quickly.
I think if you start informing 6 months in advance, it is well in time. 😉
Moderator: You are supposed to answer the reader's question and not ask a question yourself.
What Nicky wrote in an earlier response is the reality, no one can tell you how life will develop until 2024. It strongly depends on your personal wishes where you will feel comfortable in Thailand. If you are an entertainment type, then the tourist centers. Sun, sea and sand than the coast. Culture, nature and tranquility, then the north of Thailand is probably your base.
Taking pets with you is complex, expensive and a lot of hassle, so you should look for an alternative for your cat in the Netherlands. How do you want to get around in Thailand? And keep in mind that Thailand is no longer a cheap island on this continent, the costs could be quite disappointing. For accommodation, I would choose a nice resort with all the basic comfort and negotiate the price for a longer stay. Swimming pool is often available and no hassle with individual agreements from private homeowners, think of deposits, etc. You still have some time, a trial trip is a good idea, so you can soak up the atmosphere and gain experience. Furthermore, keep in mind that Thailand can be a complex country for a foreigner, often it is the case that nothing is what it seems to be according to our concepts.
With the English language, you don't always get there, many don't speak it. It's like the English say: Try and error actually there is no other way to get to know this country a bit. Good luck with the preparation and a good stay later….
Dear people,
It is very simple go there look around where you want to live or search the internet. Rent your favorite home there for the rest of your life. And it's arranged.
It seems unlikely to me that you will not be able to enter Thailand again in the future.
Perhaps you already know until what year you want to be there, for example 2050, then you can include that in the rental contract.
I wish everyone a prosperous 2018
If you only work towards it for half a year at a time and don't have the plan for another 5 years or so. I agree with the previous three Dicky, Nick and Anthonius.
More than enough to rent. Look in condominium locations and ask the people who are already there if you find a nice location. If I were to go for it every six months, I can also imagine choosing a different location every year.
I also live locally made possible by the family because there are homes all over the country at multiple locations. Fixed place is somewhere above Uttaradit, Further in Jomtien, Lat Krabang, Cha-am, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Krabi, Pitsanulok and Ubon Ratchatani. Is just nice to be able to stay in different locations.
What the future will bring in 5 years is the question and you can therefore not really answer.
Hi Rori, understand your comment, and thank you.
But apparently something is not clear in our message:
:
initially it is information for 2020! (not before 2024)
because then we want to 'test run' for 2 months.
We already know Thailand from a few holidays, so we have an idea how or where we want to sit.
We will probably rent a motorbike/car there.
You write made possible by the family on the spot? Your family?
Yes if you see my wife as family. My Thai brothers-in-law have real estate. The youngest is in project development (mainly golf courts and resorts).
We (my wife and I) have the option to live either in empty houses or in houses rented by the family.
We ourselves have a house near Uttaradit city and a condo in Jomtien.
The houses in the family are also very different in style. In Uttaradit there is a semi-traditional Thai house with all (Western Miele and Italian) elements and options.
Near Cha-am there is a traditional teak house on an 8000 m2 plot of land (invisible from the road). There is a “modern” Thai house in Lat Krabang. further into Bangkok in a soi of the ramkhamhaeng road.
There is also a house near nakhon si thammarat and another one in nonthaburi.
The last 3, just like the condo in Jomtien, can be rented for a longer period of time.
mail to [email protected] For more information. But 2020 is also far away.
It also depends on what exactly you are looking for and in what price range.
In Jomtien, for example, you can already rent a 24m2 studio for an 8000 to 10000 bath without electricity and water. A 3 room apartment does a 15000 to 25000.
The house in Cha-am comes to 25000 a month just like bangkok. ramkakhamhaeng is a very large villa with 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms garage for 2 cars and office space for a 50000 per month
Hello,
May I ask you where you are looking for these houses and apartments?
Do you do that locally or what reliable site can you find?
The things I mentioned are either mine, my wife, or my two brothers-in-law.
Furthermore, if you are looking for something in a certain place, try expedia, trivago and or agoda.
Or go on vacation and look for a rental company or real estate agent in the area where you would like to live.
Also look at the website of, for example, bangkok post houses for rent.
Or simply step into a condo complex in Thailand. There are often rental companies or intermediaries of many Western owners on the complex who rent it out.
In jomtien on first beach road there are already . Also 1 I thought Jida just outside the barrier on the right.
Further on soi 11 there are at least 3 and on second beach road also a number just at the intersection with soi 11.
Or just walk through rimhaad 1 and rimhaad 2 there are landlords in S1 and S2 and also in a1. As with many condo complexes.
Well,
As everyone says, no one can look 5 years ahead, especially with the ever-changing immigration rules. But you can visit various places in Thailand and find a place for later.
There is a website “ddproperty.com” with thousands of properties for rent all over Thailand.
But be aware: a Thai likes to receive money, but is not quick to give it back, so getting a deposit back is very difficult, especially if he knows that your plane is leaving soon.
If you also visit the north, be sure to visit Dutch Guesthouse in Chiang Mai, many Dutch people come to drink coffee there and they know a lot about long-term renting.

Dear Monica,
in your question is not "something unclear" but is "nothing clear", except partially question 3, regarding the cat, though. do you want to bring that animal for the test run in 2020 or also in 5 years?
Since you claim that you already 'several times ???' If you have been to Thailand, you would better indicate where you have already stayed. Thailand is a very large country with a great diversity of accommodation options. In fact, you can stay just about anywhere, depending on your personal wishes: mountain area, the countryside, by the sea, quiet, very quiet, busy, very busy …..??? What do you want to spend? Do you want a house, an apartment, in a Moo job, single …. who can answer that? You'll have to figure it out for yourself, that's all there is to it.
Dear Ed & Monique,
When Pattaya is in your schedule to stay.
My wife has a house that is still rented out until November 2019.
So maybe free for January and February 2020
Located at Pattaya Sukhumvit 73.

charge = interest
My wife and I are currently in Thaimedio country, also preparing for a longer stay in Thailand. But we plan to do that from next year. We rented for 3 months until the end of February 2019 through AirBNB. The longer you rent, the cheaper. AirBNB gives the opportunity to chat with the landlord before coming to an agreement, for example about how long and how expensive.
You can indeed involve various locations per month. Shorter than a month (30 days) is no longer allowed, after fierce protests from the hotel sector. (Both tenant and landlord are then punishable.) Pay by credit card: the costs will be processed per month.
I would take the cat to a boarding house for 2 months: great for that animal because no stress, and for you all convenience.
About bringing a cat, we have just done this, I can tell you the following, you start at the vet with the necessary vaccinations, microchipping and of course a passport, then you must have a health certificate from a recognized veterinarian, which must then be legalized at the NVWA in Utrecht it costs €55,16, then you have to copy everything and everything has to be sent to the department of livestock development in Thailand, just google what they need. If you have permission from Thailand, the cat can travel with you, in He does not have to be quarantined in Thailand, but he is checked at the quarantine station (read payment) costs baht 510, then you can import the cat at customs, costs baht 1000. Choosing a flight is not easy either, we wanted to fly from Düsseldorf but Emirates does not take cats, nor did Eurowings when we checked in Amsterdam at Eva air, costs €45,00 per kilo and at the bottom of the hold in a special cage, at KLM, which we ultimately chose, you can take up to 8 kg incl. basket at the top in the compartment costs € 125, if it weighs more than 8 kg, the bottom of the hold costs € 200,00, we were lucky, it weighs 8,4 kg with the basket, so travel with us, so if you still want to travel with the cat, I would say good trip, luckily for me it was one time, but I would say think about it again because of this return. Greetings Raymond
