Bangkok Bank and link with VISA

Dear readers,

I live permanently in Thailand and have been banking with Bangkok Bank for almost 10 years. To great satisfaction I can say. Never any problems, short waiting times in the bank, good service at the counter, online banking (iBanking) works fine. And because of the link with VISA, I was able to pay everywhere for 10 years with the Debit Card connected to my bank account. So until this week.

I received a nice new white card, this time with a password of 6 digits; No problem. But when I wanted to use the card, I noticed that I couldn't go anywhere to pay - other than the ATM - so far. Not at “my” hospital, not at the BIG-C, not at Lazada. Exactly the places where I – let's say – spend my money.

I have already discussed it with my own bank and have also moved to a larger office. But the friendly ladies had to admit with shame on their charming cheeks that the Bangkok Bank has chosen to cancel the link with VISA.

Bangkok Bank has apparently recently decided to have the payment services performed by UnionPay from now on. Who? UnionPay! Maybe I'm behind again, but I had never heard of it. But not at my hospital, my BIG-C and my Lazada either. Everywhere I have to walk outside, find an ATM and pay cash.

One might assume that a bank the size of the Bangkok Bank goes through life with solid partners, such as VISA or Master Card. I am now seriously considering switching completely to Kasikorn Bank, because I prefer not to work with multiple banks.

Are there more people who have the same problems with the Bankkok Bank pass / debit card?

Regards,

Jo

The question now is whether Kasikorn will also switch to Unionpay, usually the reason for a new player on the market is their more favorable conditions, for the bank of course, not for the customer.

It is strange that the existing, not yet renewed, visas are probably still connected.

Not true at all, just look at the site of bangkokbank.https://www.bangkokbank.com/en/Personal/Cards/Credit-Cards
Visas are listed everywhere. They just screwed you up.

Jo's claim is correct. The new cards no longer contain visas. I opened an account at Bangkok Bank in Soi Siam Country (Pattaya) in May this year and there are only 2 unknown logos on the debit card. UnionPay and Thai Payment network.

Your link leads to a page about credit cards, the questioner mentions a debit card - maybe that explains the difference?

Yesterday when buying a new printer.

Just took out the new (white) Bangkok, neatly keyed in the 6-digit code,
result: nothing, paid with another card!

Poor service and information from the Bangkok bank!
Or another pass or salt up with this "new" pass!.

Just ask for Visa or Master. They certainly have.

Jo writes that he is a bit behind and does not know who UnionPay is. UnionPay is the largest payment organization (debit and credit cards) in the world, based on payment transactions and issued cards, larger than Visa or Mastercard.

The website states that you can still pay with your Be1st Visa card until 2019. So you are forced to pay through unionpay.
But it looks like Unionpay is accepted for 80% worldwide…

It is, of course, a transitional phase that causes quite a few problems at the beginning.

As anywhere in the world, if you are no longer satisfied or can find better conditions elsewhere, you can simply switch banks.

So first talk to an authorized responsible person, find another bank that does meet your requirements and then bye-bye BKK bank or keep that bank as a reserve bank.

That's how we do it at the moment. Putting your eggs in a basket is never recommended.

My fairly new SMART, SCB DEBIT CARD, which also requires me to enter a six-digit PIN code, says Mastercard and Promptcard, Visa is no longer on it.

Hello I opened an and/or account at the Bangkok Bank. I also wanted to have 2 bank cards to use at ATM
The answer from the bank was that is not possible. I do have 2 bank cards from another account that I use at ATM. it is only in my name.
Does anyone have the same problem or is this the normal standard of the bank.

Does anyone have a clear answer to this.

    Greetings Ari.

Exactly, have 13 years Bangkok bank can not do anything with new card.
Often thought of leaving but due to too much hassle not yet done, but service is just as bad as the pass without visa.
So always wanted to pay with the regular visa card from Bangkok Bank, but it didn't work.
Also going to the bank and showing my frustration, my income coming in for 13 years doesn't work.
The same as the bank always pays benefits too late, when contacting the Netherlands, the bank may hold money until the last day. Given contract with the Netherlands.
So often anger for years, even with holidays Bangkok bank just does what it wants.

My benefit must be received by 26 th , even before 29 th 30 th , so the bank can earn whatever comes in from the Netherlands, among others.

But think that more banks will transfer money later because of this, I'd love to hear it.

Without rights we remain small or large in terms of income, yet milk cows in time.

Finally, why haven't you already left bkk bank.
Must inform the benefit agency of taxes, and in the past changes registered with UWV and tax authorities have not been lost for the first time.
Hence my fear of change, I moved a lot in 13 years, and a lot went wrong.

Also have Kasikorn bank but do not know if things are going better there, anyone have experience with depositing money later and of course a good visa card is important.

    Thanks robert.

I experienced much the same thing earlier this year with Siam Commercail Bank. A letter, in Thai, indicated that I had to pick up a new debit card immediately and that the old one, which was just immediate entry, was no longer valid.
When we arrived at the bank, the new card was not available. Oh so sorry, Bangkok not sent.
Present at another branch, so with a new card with 6-digit PIN on to Big C, and did not work. Branch of SCB in Big C said can't, Big C manager along, phone calls with Bangkok, nothing helped.
Then it was suddenly Big C's fault because they had not adjusted their ATM software,
Big C said SCB should do that. Fortunately I was able to withdraw money at ATM so I tapped flaps every time before shopping at Big C. Talked to farang manager of Big C Xtra in CURRENT Mai, didn't understand and had the same problem. Next day at all cash registers note that SCB Cards are no longer accepted. No one to blame so problem remains. Still, I will continue to live in Thailand, because what I experienced in the Netherlands this week in the field of government digitization is 3x worse.

The new debit cards do indeed mention Union Pay instead of Visa. The “old” cards can be replaced free of charge before the end of 2018. These old cards can now still be used this year.

    rate

If you have a Be1st Smart VISA, Be1st Smart Rabbit VISA, Be1st Smart Rabbit Siriraj VISA or Be1st VISA debit card, you can still use your card until 2019. You can also change your existing card to a more secure 6-digit PIN CHIP card – simply visit a Bangkok Bank branch to receive your new card free of charge.

I now see that my Be2016st Smart card issued in November 1 – when opening the account – already mentions Union Pay instead of VISA. It is also a chip card with a pin code of 6 digits. So this development cannot be entirely new….,,…

I have an account with Bangkok bank since last July. Also had a debit card union pay. I also have a HongKong and a China Union Pay card. The latter cards work without problems everywhere, but as soon as I give my Thai Bangkok card union pay, problems often arise. Or does not work, or takes longer and extra actions for cashier staff. Strange case. But I'm not too concerned about it. Spending money is all too easy 🙂

Last week I applied for a visa card at Bangkok Bank with Visa.
Haven't got it yet, but should be delivered to my home next week if all goes well
Pretty sure I can just use it as a visa.
My Visa card from the Netherlands from ICS will stop in September because ICS no longer supports visa cards in Thailand due to new legislation, so I had to.

I have read with interest all the responses to my question who has recent experience with the Bangkok Bank's DEBET Card. I see various confirmations that this DEBET Card is indeed no longer linked to the VISA payment service.

I've seen all kinds of information come by, where I noticed that some people didn't seem to know the difference between a debit card and a credit card. Cornelis also points this out. That is important to conduct the discussion in the right way.

Anyway, it is clear to me that - after a good preliminary investigation - I will take a bank that can provide a good payment service from my debit card; finished.

It is no longer important to me, but the comment of 3 people has piqued my interest: GerKorat, Sjaak S and Geert point out that the UnionPay payment service is global and would be accepted for 80%.

Well - despite quite a bit of searching - I can't find a (larger) company that accepts this payment method.
    • Ali-express has 13 payment methods, but no UnionPay
    • Lazada has 4 payment methods including Pay Pal, but no Union Pay
    • BIG-C does not accept a card with (only) the UnionPay payment method
    • The (not really small) Mc Cormick Hospital in Chiang Mai: no UnionPay
    • The American Amazon.com does not accept UnionPay. But that's no wonder; According to good American custom, they mainly issue their own credit cards and similar ones
    • And finally - but this has already been said - I also tried Bol.com and Media Markt, both in the Netherlands. No one accepts Union Pay.

I will only return to it out of interest. Because how is it possible that the UnionPay is accepted for 80% worldwide, and is even the largest payment service in the world, while I can't find a company that accepts their service.
Also, I can hardly imagine that I have never seen UnionPay on a door sticker, while in my long life I can hardly imagine a shop or hotel door without the well-known VISA or Marter Card icon. But from today we will pay attention to it.
Incidentally, I also await with interest the new Bangkok Bank Card with VISA (Debit) from Wim.
    Again, thanks for everyone's contribution.

This week I informed my sister is in the account world because I had plans to go to the Netherlands for a while and since my money arrives in the bank in Thailand, I have a bank cart with union pay but cannot use it in the Netherlands.
