Reader question: Is 4G in Thailand really 4G?

Dear readers,

I have a SIM card from DTAC on my iPhone 6 because I have a lot of internet. Now I see 4G on the display of my phone, but I wonder if that is correct?

In the Netherlands I also have 4G and that is considerably faster than in Thailand, a difference of day and night.

Am I doing something wrong or are we being taken for a ride with 4G in Thailand?

Regards,

Marco

The average download speed via 4G in the Netherlands is 19Mbps. In Thailand 8Mbps.

A little more puzzling and we see that True Move scores around 11 and DTAC doesn't even reach 4 yet.

Dtac has 3.9G at 2100Mhz in most places. Only in so-called business areas in Bankok on the slightly faster operating frequency 1800Mhz.
In the Netherlands it is also 3.9G but most (KPN, Vodafone & Tele2) at 800Mhz.
Only Korea has a real 4G network. The rest of the world still manages with a maximum of 3.9G on different frequencies.
The higher the frequency, the worse the range, and the slower the connection.
The distance to the nearest transmitting/receiving mast and the amount of obstacles between the mast and you also have an influence.
DTAC has a good '4G' (3.9G may be called 4G) network, comparable to the Netherlands, only in a few places the good frequency in combination with a good reception without obstacles between you and the mast. That is why the internet on 4G in Thailand often does not reach a quarter of the speed it does in the Netherlands.

Yes, in Thailand 4G is just 4G, but as you yourself indicate, the speed is lower than in the Netherlands.

You can perform a speed test, then you know your speed, and of course also take into account that if you view a Dutch page this is slower than a page from Thailand, the weakest link is the connection between the Netherlands and Thailand. For the speed test you can go to http://www.speedtest.net.

I also always use a Dtac card in Thailand and I am satisfied with it. with speedtest app on android I usually get 40 – 50mb

Unfortunately, in Thailand nothing is what it should be on what they propose, they try to keep up but are decades behind the west, and (personally) only the weather can appeal to me here and the rest will (hopefully) one day sometimes, although I now have my doubts about that.
So my argument is that 4G is not 4G in Thailand with the exception of Bkk, the whole internet thing is a real disaster in Thailand in many places.
    Best regards.

They don't have 2G yet, let alone 3. And 4G will take another 25 years. A rain shower or storm and all falls out.
