Who would have expected that… (readers entry)

November 10 2021

Well, certainly not this young man. There's on here Thailandblog.nl already passed a lot about what COVID-19 has brought about, could there be another writing? I'm sure, after years of reading with great pleasure, it's time to make a contribution yourself.

At the beginning of 2019, several questions arise: are we getting married? If so, will we get married in the Netherlands or in Thailand? And where are we going to live? Or will we continue to travel back and forth for the time being? Do we have the finances in order? What conditions must we meet? Which documents must be submitted? Not a word yet about COVID-19, after all, there was no knowledge of that yet. Without going too deeply into the above considerations, the pros and cons were weighed against each other, preferences were expressed and, miraculously, we came out unscathed: get married in Thailand, register the marriage in the Netherlands and then start living together in Thailand.

Supposedly done, or so we thought. Getting married in Thailand (it is now November 2019) went very smoothly despite some nerves beforehand. We had opted for a ceremony with an afterparty in a modest circle. The modest circle was ultimately a lot less modest than expected, but that was not allowed to spoil the fun, on the contrary!

So far everything according to plan, but during the honeymoon in Bali, the misery started: a double ear infection. Water everywhere, but you are not allowed to swim…

After the honeymoon, the umpteenth farewell was imminent, back to the Netherlands to register the marriage and finalize the final affairs, to get back on the plane and finally be able to live together in Ubon Ratchathani just like normal people.

Arrived in the Netherlands immediately but started with the marriage registration. This was more difficult than expected, but in the end the bullet was through the church. In the meantime, the first reports of COVID-19 started to emerge, but not alarming at the time, so a visa was applied for and a one-way ticket to Thailand was booked. However, the visa was never used and it was still a hell of a job to get a refund on the booked ticket.

The final crossing was to be made in May 2020, but things turned out differently. New plans were made but postponed again and again due to all the uncertainty, good hope was repeatedly dashed by a considerable revival of the virus and already FaceTimed you will be another year further in no time. Finally got on the plane on August 26, 2021, endured 2 weeks of quarantine (I was 100 % better by the way) and then lovingly flew into each other's arms after almost 2 years of waiting. At least; “I miss you so much, I think I have to cry when I see you after such a long time” were often used words.

Once I landed in Ubon, I was the last person to leave the plane, because my other half had booked the very back seat in the plane so that I would sit next to as few other people as possible in order to reduce the chance of a COVID-19 infection. So it took a while before I arrived in the arrivals hall with my suitcase and who did I find waiting there; “what took you so long, you should have come out of the plane as first. Don't you miss me?!

      Dear Burt,
Bas and his wife will probably still go to Udon, but they do live in Ubon Ratchathani. Certainly a long way from there.
Many get these cities confused, especially since they are both in Isarn

The last part, man I was bent over laughing.
Tears of laughter brushed my cheeks.
Welcome to the wonderful world of relationships and women.
Keep in mind that this will happen more often.
It leaves you with a feeling of WTF, but count on it and don't be too surprised.

I see you are still quite young, but from my own lifelong experience I can tell you that it doesn't matter where they come from. However, Thai can certainly do some of it.
I'm actually not used to anything else and every time I wait for the next weird episode.
Now have a relationship of 6 years with a Thai, no not a youngster (yes ok we differ 8 years), with a Thai university study, but man o man.

Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that your relationship will work and you will have a great life with her. Enjoy to the fullest, but don't be put off.
And as for covid, forget it. Will take years, I'm afraid.

Nice story Bas, and indeed may have a sequel. I'm very curious about what you're going to do in Ubon and how it will all turn out. A kind of … I'm leaving … but different.
Why not update us every 6 months. You are an entertaining writer.
    Have fun ig

    Wonderful story Bass.
I wish you good luck in Thailand.
Refreshing to read a story from someone younger.

Have fun and good luck. I am curious what the pros and cons of living here or there were for you and what was the deciding factor. I sometimes think about it myself. Work in particular remains a thing. Furthermore, a super nice country, well human rights, freedom and democracy have failed for many years, but something can be done about that.

Work/income is indeed a thing, will come back to how we adapt to it.

Nice story Bas, it could be about myself. There are 2 big differences, we couldn't get married in Ubon because of the outbreak of the virus, also had to cancel everything. Finally, in the middle of 2020, I decided to apply for a visa for my wife to get married here. After 2x negative advice!!!!!! finally got the approval in March 2021 and married here. Now after 7,5 months we are going back to Thailand together. Also to Ubon! I only have to wait another 6 years to live there, then I will stop working and we will probably also live there.
Who knows, maybe we'll bump into each other!
    Good luck.

All those formalities can sometimes indeed require the necessary perseverance, it's great that it worked out in the end!

How nicely written, I agree with the other calls to regularly submit an update about your stay in Thailand.
And that logic, yes, it is inscrutable. But that's what makes the Thai so special.
    Good luck!
