Reader Submission: My Thai girlfriend was not allowed on the bus
Dear readers,
It may have been published before, but I certainly did not know, my Thai girlfriend was not allowed on the bus.
On Friday I book two bus tickets from Krabi to Bangkok in my hotel in Krabi: 600 baht per person. When we arrive at the tour bus company on Saturday, it turns out that my Thai girlfriend is not allowed on that bus. So we were only allowed to go with a minibus to Surat Thani and we had to take a government bus to Bangkok.
The tour company has arranged tickets for a hefty surcharge of 350 baht per person. Fortunately, we arrived just in time at Surat bus station.
So if you are traveling with a Thai group, it is best to inquire before booking.
Regards,
Philip
I occasionally travel by bus. My wife is always with me and sometimes family too, but I have never known that anyone has refused my wife or family.
On what basis did that refusal come about? Because she's Thai?
That's discrimination, what nonsense, because you're Thai and you pay just as much
I also often went with the VIP bus, but there were always more Thais than farangs
Was a (good) reason given by the bus company? If you have paid for your ticket, busmij cannot refuse a passenger. An extremely strange story. There will still be something behind it.
And what was the reason she couldn't come along?
This seems like a very strange story to me. A Thai who is not allowed to travel on a Thai bus? And what was the reason for the refusal according to the bus company? This seems to me to be another example of Farang making a financial dent that some locals are very good at...
Could you explain why she was not allowed to come?
Why couldn't your girlfriend come along? I really don't understand that?
If you had two tickets, then 2 people could come along, right? One ticket per person?
I've never heard of that now. I have been married to a Thai man for more than 20 years and we have never had such a problem?
Did they discriminate on the basis of nationality? Was it only for foreigners? And were Thai people not allowed to come? Strange thing….
Annoying and unbelievable. Has a reason been given for the refusal?
really can't imagine this.
maybe your girlfriend has a bad past with the bus company….
if there was nothing wrong with you and your girlfriend ask for money back and if necessary call the police
Apparently certain companies are not allowed to take Thai, probably because this is competition with the government buses.
Upon arrival at the tour company, there were 2 police officers who checked the passports.
My girlfriend asked why she couldn't come along, and the police confirmed that this is the case.
Regards Phillip.
Philip, this stinks like hell. You paid far too high a price, and the police checked the passports. I've never seen police checking passports when you get on a bus.
This is just plain corruption.
I find this a very strange story. I travel a lot by bus in Thailand with my Thai girlfriend and have never experienced anything like this. Were perhaps too many seats sold for the bus and were you the last to get on the bus? Like the others here, I'm very curious as to why.
hi
I've never heard this before.
for what reason was she not allowed to come?
punishment .

I also experienced a few years ago, also Krabi to Bangkok. My wife (Thai) was also not allowed to come because it was the VIP bus and for Thai people there was another Bush, they said. However, we just got on because we had tickets with my wife at the window and I next to it and then just pretend nothing was wrong and just take that bus to BKK….
Experienced this years ago in Suratani.
When purchasing the bus tickets, I was told that my Thai girlfriend was not allowed on the bus, and I was not given any explanation as to why.
She was definitely not on the blacklist they didn't even ask her name, I think it's private bus companies that might not be insured for Thais if they have an accident.
I accidentally told this to my current girlfriend last week, she was very surprised about it, she had never heard it.
We then took the train.
Now my in-laws live in Krabi and come to the capital by bus almost every month, (Sai Tai bus station). I always pick up and drop off, and I know the ins and outs of bus tickets fairly well.
And the explanation that your girlfriend was not allowed to come is very unlikely. If you have a valid ticket, you will never be refused boarding on a bus, because your seat number is stated on this ticket, just like a boarding pass on an airplane.
But, you told that you paid 600 Baht pp for a ticket Krabi-Bangkok at your hotel. Well, that is not possible, because that is less than my parents-in-law pay. Because they pay 620 THB for a ticket in a 48 seat bus. A ticket on a VIP bus costs more than 1000 THB.
So I fear a scam from the seller of your ticket, or tour company. This ticket was printed out, on which your passport number or identity card was printed.
Chiel, VIP buses are mainly taken by Thai, the westerners are usually in the minority there is what I see on Sai Tai.
I can only advise everyone to always take a government bus, recognizable by the Garuda on the sides, and to buy your tickets online at the bus station or in Tesco Lotus, where you can even choose your seat.
Henry, for convenience I had booked a bus in PN guesthouse, so not a government bus but from a private company. Cost 600 bath per person (so it is possible). Krabi to Kao San Road. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the company.
They then take you with a minibus to Surat Thani and there you go on a 36 person bus of that company (together with others from Ko Samui).
Apparently this company is not allowed to take Thai people. There's nothing wrong with my girlfriend.
I would actually like to know why.
Next time I will just go to the bus station and book tickets there.
Regards Phillip
Always take a goverments bus or Nakhon chai air. Those are the only safe buses. Those you book through hotels etc. are usually those old discarded buses that you often read about because they have no brakes or the suspension is rotten. And the Thais are not allowed to because they know that the price of those buses is lower.
I also travel a lot by bus through Thailand, I have never even taken a domestic flight, but when purchasing my bus ticket, I have never been asked for my passport or ID card, I have never seen this mentioned on a bus ticket.
What I certainly agree with is to take a government bus, I think these are the blue and white buses, but this is not clear in all bus stations.
I was refused to issue a bus ticket for my Thai girlfriend at the time.
to clarify the whole story.
on Friday I book 2 tickets from Krabi to Bangkok in my guesthouse. 2×600 bath.
I get a note that says I paid.
Saturday afternoon at 15:30 we are picked up by a minibus and taken to an office of a tour company. Only my girlfriend is Thai there, the rest are foreigners.
There we have to show our note and we get a sticker. As soon as the lady behind the counter sees my girlfriend, she says that they are not allowed to transport Thai people. She is willing to arrange tickets from Surat to Bangkok with a government bus. surcharge 350 bath per person.
When I ask why she can't come along, she says that this is Thai law.
At 16:30 everyone goes in 2 minibuses and we are taken to Surat Thani. The farangs get off at an office of the tour company. Someone is waiting with 2 bus tickets for us.
We are taken to the bus station (only the 2 of us) and there we take a “governments bus”.
Now I am the only farang.
The police officers confirmed to my girlfriend that she was indeed not allowed to come along and that this was a problem with the law.
So I don't think this was corruption. That 350 bath extra per person was a bit too much, but it was pay or not get to Bangkok.
Regards Phillip
They call that being screwed. Never experienced that before (in more than 15 years). She did try to cheat things in Suranthani. There the bus is indeed controlled by the mafia. But that was not because my wife is Thai. That is for new to me too
I experienced the same thing in 2013, when my girlfriend and I wanted to go from Krabi to Hua Hin. But we didn't make a big deal out of it. My girlfriend told me that only foreigners were allowed on certain buses. Those were some VIP buses. I can't remember why that was – something about insurance – I don't remember. We then booked another bus, which we both could ride on.
Took VIP bus (Greenbus) Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai this week with my Thai wife more Thais than farrangs never had any problems.
