Dear readers,

Can you still withdraw cash in Thailand at an ATM with a 'Maestro logo'? When I ask my bank (this week) I get another typical answer that doesn't help you.

To quote: In theory, you could use your debit card in Thailand at all ATMs displaying the “Maestro” logo. However, due to a conflict between Mastercard (owner of the Maestro brand) and several ATM operators regarding the security of the ATMs and responsibility in the event of fraud, some operators refuse cards or allow only a limited amount to be withdrawn.

This situation changes daily and is completely separate from our bank.

Just so you know.

Greetings from Belgium,

Freddy

Usually has to do with the fact that mostly in Thailand the bank cards do not have chip & pin technology and the ATMs are not equipped for it either, and this is therefore considered unsafe by the EU due to the possibility of copying the magnetic stripe. banks, and only that release option of the block is provided upon request.
Furthermore, the use of the pure credit card is recommended ….. guess what it is read …,?. Right… with the magnetic strip here, and is not blocked by the Eu. banks (more money of course!)

Now, however, Bangkok bank is already switching to that Chip and pin technology .... however, they only work on their ATMs! And not at the other ATMs..
The other banks will also follow suit by adjusting their systems, according to news.

PS; it is indeed a bit scary to know that if you lose your card, the dishonest finder can go shopping at your expense because you only have to “swipe” the card instead of normally having to enter our pin at the shop terminal in the EU

Your maestro function can be used in any tam in Thailand, provided your bank has unblocked this card for use outside of Europe. By default, maestro is blocked to supposedly prevent fraud and let you use a payment card.
so just tell your bank to unblock it

    freddy,

I visit Thailand a lot and just got back from a week ago. I always pin Thailand and at many different machines. Never a problem. Occasionally a transaction fails, but that can also be due to the line connection. In my experience, Thailand is the country with the most ATM machines in the world. There is one on almost every corner of the state. And I mean that almost literally. I have read numbers of 35 or 40 thousand ATM machines all over Thailand. In the Netherlands you really have to look for a vending machine in Thailand you walk no more than 100 meters.

So do not worry. Make sure that your pass is suitable for use outside Europe. At ING you can do this via the website in “My ING”

    Succes

At all ATMs with the meastro logo you can use a pin. (before you leave in NL, make sure that your pass has been made suitable for foreign transactions)

Your debit card must be suitable for use outside the EU. Only, abroad is not enough there. Add that it must be for Asia.

I can just withdraw with my ING Maestro card and even 20.000 Bht at the Bangkok Bank. to withdraw.
But that's a Dutch card, so I don't know how it goes with the Belgian Maestro card.

My experiences with the ing pass are also of this nature. It depends on which bank you are visiting at that moment and especially if you do not have a credit card with the same bank, for example, if you have an abn, then take a credit card from another bank. I have already experienced this myself. no money at the atm and then inside the bank with a credit card sorry sir it is blocked

@Johannes, this is not true and makes no sense. I have a debit and credit card with the same bank, the ING, and use both, here in Thailand, at all ATMs. No problems with that. Have had these since 1999, first at the Postbank and later ING. As far as the ABN is concerned, I believe you, I have experienced several ABN customers who could not get / get money from the wall, a rotten bank.

Please put a space after a period and a comma. That increases readability.

@Freddy , My KBC (Belgium) – Maestro bank card is no longer usable in Thailand for about 3,5 years, according to KBC for security reasons . (only the copyable magnetic strip is used here instead of the chip)
KBC – Visa will still work for the time being & cash withdrawal with this card is cheaper than cash withdrawal via Maestro. (when Maestro still worked here)
So check again with your bank & take a Visa card with you just to be sure.
Also bring your card reader so that you can "top up" your Visa account online, or book hotels & plane tickets online. (I do almost weekly)

At the moment I am in Thailand and I can just use my ING Maestro card to withdraw cash, and with this card I can withdraw up to 20.000 Baht money at Bangkok Bank
