Once I took a little walk near our house. It was already evening, no local traffic. Suddenly I saw a Barn Owl, Common Barn Owl, Tyto Alba feasting on a rat.

The next day I went back to it and saw it in a tree and it started hissing loudly.

The next day, local residents had stretched a net at the edge of the paddy field to catch it, whereupon I cut the net in half after freeing some already trapped birds. I haven't seen the owl since then and it must have “moved” to Chatuchak!

The Thai word for owl is นกฮูก, nók-hôêk, which is pronounced with first a high and short tone ending in a barely pronounced 'g' sound (as in “gay”), and then a (semi-)long but descending tone, again ending in this light guttural sound.

in Thai it is an "onomathopeic" word. A word that indicates the sound of the "thing". In this case, the call of the owl.

Learned something new, I didn't know that concept. An 'onomatopoeia', in Dutch. The Thai word for cat – แมว – also falls into that category (Mèow).

Also applies to the gecko. At least I thought gecko was the Dutch word until today I read on the wiki that tokeh can also be used in Dutch. So in Dutch and Thai we use the same name for this large lizard species, namely tokeh. The sound resembles the name tokeh. They are not the wall lizards, the small ones, but tokeh is the large one which is colored with blue and orange and has sharp teeth.
By the way, I sometimes have these as guests and remove them with a broom and bllk-on-handle (to keep a safe distance from their teeth) and then I take them a little further over the 2 meter high wall enclosure into the wild. After a day or so they are back. Yes, says my friend, you should put them in a bag and then take them far away because they have a good sense of orientation and will walk back home, just like cats.

I have no problem with this lizard, he doesn't wake me up and I stay away from his teeth but he is more afraid of me than I am of him. I think it's a very beautiful lizard. By the way, when you get bitten, he won't let go, you have to keep him under water until he lets go!
