Dear readers, after many mailings and complaints, finally the English insurance statement COVID-19 from my health insurer VGZ. So finally end of discussion.

COVID-19 SUPPLEMENT

Herewith we, Zorgverzekeraar VGZ Insurance Company, confirm the insurance of:

[personal information]

Insured are all necessary medical costs, including COVID-19 treatment and observation, which could not be foreseen at departure, during a temporary stay abroad for a period of at most 365 days. The costs of transport with an ambulance are only covered when this transport is necessary for medical reasons to obtain medical care at the nearest hospital. In case of an admission to a hospital our insurance company only covers the costs of the lowest nursing-class. Not insured are costs:

  • which are not included in our health insurance;
  • or medical tests; treatment or an admission to hospital which were the purpose of traveling abroad;
  • of transport, except for transport with an ambulance as mentioned above;
  • or repatriation.

All the above mentioned is assured under the conditions of the policy.

Yours Sincerely,

Health insurer VGZ

    “which could not be foreseen at departure,”

    And always those ambiguous handy little lines free for handy interpretative. And this is just one of the others
    Well , better than nothing , hoping for Thai immigration blessing .

    Hopeful, says David H. I hope contributor Jan will keep us informed, please?

      Hi David
      Had the same problem with ftbo.
      Didn't give an explanation.
      When I had interpolis travel insurance, they also gave no explanation.
      Canceled everything, was tired of it,,,, well or not.
      Have taken out a covid19insure at AA insure Hua Hin, arranged within 2 days.
      Accepted by the Thai Embassy in The Hague.

    The text seems to contradict itself.

    Insured are all necessary medical costs, including COVID-19 treatment and observation, which could not be foreseen at departure, during a temporary stay abroad for a period of at most 365 days.

    Not insured are costs: which are not included in our health insurance;

    It could of course be possible that there are costs in the Covid treatment that are excluded by the insurer.

    That $ 100.000 may also include an amount for quarantine.
    But that is probably not reimbursed by the insurer, one could fall over that too.

    Furthermore, the $ 100.000 is not literally mentioned and people will probably want to see it in the text.

    It is a pitiful text, which begins with a single confirmation that person X is insured for Covid-19 treatment, provided that a large number of conditions and exceptions are met. An immigration officer who does not speak English well cannot handle this text, and will put it aside, all the more because the 100K USD is not mentioned.
    Critical is the phrase: “All the above mentioned is insured under the conditions of the policy.” No one in Thailand is familiar with VGZ policy conditions, and the “patient” will really not be asked for any further explanation.

    This seems to be the maximum that VGZ can promise with regard to the policy cover.
    VGZ pays up to what it would cost in the Netherlands.
    Normally you were covered with a travel insurance.
    As long as Thailand remains on orange, travel insurance that covers COVID is not included.
    The question is whether the Thai Embassy accepts the lack of the amount of USD 100.000 in black and white.
    They carry out the rules imposed by Bangkok.
    If they don't accept this, it's probably end of story.

    Jan, please keep us informed of the response of the Thai Embassy.
    .
    This is so important for anyone who wants to go to Thailand.
    Who knows how long that requirement will last.

      Just want to comment on a few things.
      Of course, VGZ writes with caution, which I would also do given the many fraudsters. I'm still helped in a neat way so I'm positive in my life.
      I have taken out travel insurance with OOM, which clearly states that covid-19 is covered. And no insurance is going to pay your costs if you do secretly try to leave with covid-19. To be with your loved ones. So I think if you behave normally and are nice to your insurance, there is nothing to worry about. That 100000 was not taken into account at all, the point is that the Thai state does not pay for us, they are rightly trying to prevent that in the Netherlands and around the world. And people who fear texts etc. I would almost think stay home. I think this document will definitely be accepted by the embassy. If it is not the case, let me know I would like to have another discussion with VGZ, they were now very helpful and knew about my request as they had already helped several people who went to Thailand for an operation.
      Groet
      Jan

        Dear Jan, I myself already have a statement from CZ that says about the same thing. The Dutch insurers are not allowed to mention amounts and CZ says in the statement: "a general maximum reimbursement does not apply ", so there is no maximum reimbursement and that is more than USD 100.000 insured, you can read it here if necessary. Another blog reader has already entered Thailand with a similar statement and, upon inquiry, explained this upon arrival in Thailand. After all, the embassy has also issued a permission form for this and it has been accepted. In short, see no bears on the road and this seems to solve the insurance issue for Thailand for those who fall under the Dutch healthcare system and therefore have compulsory Dutch health insurance

      • Ger Korat says up

        CZ also writes in the statement and at my request that the insurance applies in the event of a Covid-19 infection. I therefore do not need additional insurance such as with OOM.

    It is a pity that the Thai embassy apparently does not short-circuit with the Thai government that all Dutch people are compulsorily insured and that all those insurance policies cover treatment for Covid19. Then this whole superfluous circus would not have to be gone through.

  7. Henk says up

    Dear Jan,
    Thank you for posting this statement.
    This is precisely the situation in which Thailandblog plays an indispensable role.
    Fast, up to date, and a critical group of readers.
    Thanks for all your responses.
    And Jan ….. keep us posted (good luck in the embassy)

  8. winlouis says up

    Waiting to see how it goes, thanks for a follow-up. Thanks in advance Jan.

  9. Dirk says up

    It is known that USD 100.000 is not a must and statements are accepted from insurers worded accordingly. Oa van Anderzorg.

    I have received the same statement from Zorgzaam/Univé health insurance. So I am indeed curious whether Jan will enter Thailand with this statement. As I do not belong to the groups that are currently allowed to enter.

    I don't quite understand Laksi's story, especially about the hassle with
    papers from VGZ. I've been living in Thailand for 16 years now, so I've had mine 15 times already
    retirement visa (Laksi calls that retreatment visa, it seems to me something else……..)
    renewed, and have never, I never repeat anything of any policy or otherwise form
    of a health insurance policy. Perhaps that is due to the
    handling immigration post, I always go to Pattaya (formerly Soi 8, now
    soi 5 Jomtien).

  12. Hans van Mourik says up

    Is this VGZ statement for people who are still registered in the Netherlands?
    Because they wrote to an acquaintance of mine here in Changmai who is insured with CZ by email that they already have those statements.
    An excolleague KLU, in Leeuwarden, who is insured with FBTO also asked this and received the answer that they issue that statement in English with covid19.
    He must apply for it 14 days before departure and also from when to when he will be staying in Thailand.
    He asked me how long he can stay away for the insurance (wouldn't know).
    Just ask the FBTO, for the time being he will not stay there in quarantine for 14 days.
