In the 25 years that my wife and I have been coming to Pattaya, for two months every year, we have seen many changes (or improvements).

For example, the night market has been renovated in the past two years, a large metal roof over the entire market and neatly tiled stalls on both sides of the 4 (up to 150 meters) long paths. Food stalls are under construction at the end of this.

Only some very important things have been forgotten: there is no emergency exit in case of fire, you can only go out through one of the 4 narrow entrances….

The back exits, formerly at the end of the paths, are completely bricked up and hermetically sealed on the walls with coarse gauze. The side exits have also disappeared by placing a closed row of cafes on that side.

If something happens here, the disaster will be incalculable and will be a repeat of the big hotel fire on Jomtien, where all emergency exits were blocked, while emergency exits that are not available on the market at all.

I really wonder how such a construction passed the fire safety inspection….

Fire prevention is apparently not a priority in Thailand.
Read my story “Fire prevention in Thailand” from August 11, 2011 again, still relevant!

Fire safety is not or hardly present in many places.
It is striking that despite the fact that cooking is still done on charcoal or gas bottles in many places, no precautions are taken anywhere.
During the turn of the year, for example, in Hua Hin, the lucky balloons are released on the beach. Many end up among the public.
At the end of the evening, everyone has to go through the narrow passage back to the center.
The passage is small as half the path is full of motorbikes. If something happens here, the disaster cannot be overseen. Emergency workers can't get through either.
It must be a small effort to clear the path for pedestrians.
Safety on several levels is hard to find.
Smoking at a gas station is also normal.
