Els van Wijlen is currently staying with her husband 'de Kuuk' on Koh Phangan. Her son Robin has opened a coffee cafe on the island.

A busy day. I have to change money at the bank and I'm going to pay the electric bill for Bubba's. First we take the scooter to the Kohphanganse PNEM building where the bill has to be paid in cash.

Before I go in, I take off my slippers, because that's how it should be in Thailand. I pay the bill and go out again and guess what???? Slipper off. Shit, they were such good slippers.

There is still a poor pair of slippers, left behind by the thief. Ugly and worn out.
With a long face and the necessary resistance I put them on. I can't go to the couch barefoot.

I'm disappointed, my good diamond slippers have been stolen. They are actually normal flip flops, and the diamond is made of plastic, but the emotional value weighs heavily.

They were bought in Australia when I drove the Great Ocean Road with Roos….
Quality time!! A beautiful experience.

But wait a minute… someone who was before me must have brought the slippers. Coincidentally, I know the older man who was in front of me. There was also a blonde woman, I don't know her, but I'm just going to ask who it was. She also paid a bill at the PNEM just before me, so her details are known.

Yes, he must have done it… what a bitch to steal my slippers. So I go in and a little later I step out belligerently with a phone number.

With the old worn-out fake havaianas I go to the bank on the scooter.

I'm not comfortable at all, what a mess again, I have to solve everything again. When I enter the bank it is also very busy. I take a number and what do I see?? That blonde bitch is at the counter!!

Adrenaline shoots through my body, in my mind I already tear the slippers off her feet. I dart forward and just before I want to talk to her, I see that she is wearing sneakers.

Hohoho Elsje, full on the brakes and stay in place.

With adrenaline still screeching in my body, I sink into a chair and then realize that the old guy stole my slippers. He probably doesn't even notice. Just like the Kuuk, who also regularly comes home with a few other slippers, whether that happens at night or in broad daylight, whether they are different in color or size. it does not matter. Totally thoughtless, slippers are put on the foot.

Yes, it must be the old one.
I'll look it up right away.

Change money first.

When exchanging I exchange 3000 baht for 100 baht. In my mind I'm with my missing slippers until I get forty 100s from the bank man. So, he's making a mistake. That's a nice bonus... can I buy a pair of new slippers... or should I report it nicely?

All kinds of thoughts run through my head, I doubt…but then good decency wins and I say that I think I gave 3000 and not 4000.

The bills are already in the pile.

I'm not entirely sure either, because I'm obviously very upset by the theft.
My phone number is noted and if they have a difference at the end of the day, they call me.

I am a good person, but also a loser.
Of course they have that difference anyway, no difference, still a difference.
If only I had kept my mouth shut.

Now first to the old man to pick up my slippers.

With squealing brakes I stop right in front of his door. Unfortunately, he is not at home and my slippers are not in front of his door either.
Then I have to go back tomorrow, it's not easy today. Well, this man won't walk around with diamonds on his flip flops for fun, will he?

Then go home..on the scooter....what a bad day.

Along the way I come to the conclusion that I really like that I didn't rip off the bank for 1000 baht. If Karma does its job, I might get my slippers back.

You won't believe it, but as I think about it, I hear a chatter behind me. A scooter drives up next to me and points to the slippers on his feet…..hey my slippers…and those feet, hahaha I recognize them too!!!!!
That is not normal… Karma exists… my slippers are justified.
My day can not be ruined.

We stop and the Kuuk gasps, yes, yes I accidentally put them on at Bubba's. When I noticed it, I went looking for you, because I drive a fool with that diamond. Give me back my own slippers.

The next day she called from the bank if I wanted to bring 1000 baht…

… well, I don't have to buy new slippers anymore.

What a wonderfully told story, you return your slippers for 1.000 Bath honesty.
The Kuuk needs new ones to read, can also be added.

Is there such a difference in protocol between the Thai PNEM and a bank that you have to take off your footwear at the PNEM, but you cannot go to the bank without it?
And I don't know the island, but is it still so tropical there that you have to go to the bank to change a few thousand baht notes?
It's still a nice story, but I still wonder.

We have almost the same size flip flops. And the nephavaiana is a common variety on Koh Phangan. The slippers on my partner's feet were my slippers. When I left the bank I just had on a pair of slippers, namely the pair of kicked-off ones (from the Kuuk) that I had “found” at the PNEM building. Apparently I put on the slippers from the Kuuk at home, but because I too thoughtlessly put the slipper on my foot, I did not notice it. There is still debate at home, who put on the other's slippers first. Given events from the past, that will certainly have been the Kuuk.

And… you still love the Kuuk. That's real love. Must be a lottery ticket that Kuuk. Nice story.

FANTASTIC story!! Great to go along in, even on the scooter. TOP that you have your slippers back ... don't even think about it, to drive you crazy. And honesty always pays! on the right track
