A mackerel birthday party

You have birthdays and you have birthdays that stay with you for a long time. Thanapron Fungchenchokcharoen's (whom we just call Sue) clearly fell into the latter category. Her husband Johan Wiekel organized a mackerel party for about thirty guests, on the occasion of Sue's birthday, but also to celebrate the arrival of the new North Sea fish to Hua Hin

Johan is a hospitality man in heart and soul (Van der Valk and a restaurant in North Limburg). In Hua Hin he can fully indulge in his hobby: smoking mackerel in a self-built oven. It is located in what he calls: Restaurant Le Garage, where the car is normally parked… (with a nod to Joop Braakhekke).

The majority of the guests consisted of the 'hard core', from the NVT Hua Hin and Cha Am. In Johan Wiekel's garden, for example, we met former chairman Do van Drunen, former event coordinators Theo van der Heijde and Eric Reinhardt and former treasurer Leo Vos. Ad and Nelly Gillesse were also present, in addition to Jan and One Verkade. Work is going on day and night at villa park De Banyan to make Jan and One's new villa habitable before Christmas.

All thirty guests received a whole freshly smoked mackerel on the plate, while the enthusiasts could get a second one. The fish were sublime smothered in their own fat.

Johan eats half a mackerel every day. He does not sell the smoked mackerel, but gives them away to good friends. Because the alcohol flowed abundantly (also in the excellent Irish Coffee), the Thai ladies quickly got their feet off the gravel.

    Dear John
I live right next to Udon Thani.
And at the sight of the mackerels, my mouth watered.
Too bad you don't sell them.
But I also think the journey is too long to get them here properly.
But if there are options, I'd like to be recommended.

    Regards Jan den Hertog.

That looks delicious and healthy too. It's good that there are people like Johan. Enjoy it. I also use these creatures on a regular basis. Always say half on bread, but it always goes clean. Keep it up and have a good time. Greetings from Pattaya.
